Your Favorite Jarred Marinara/Pasta Sauce...

Well, it was good while it lasted.

Campbell’s bought Pepperidge Farm brand soups. And killed them off.

If I want to splurge, I’ll get Rao’s. When I just want a reasonably priced jar of something to keep in the cabinet for a pinch, I’ll get Bertolli or Classico.

Years ago Emeril Lagasse had a line of sauces. My favorite was the one called “Kicked Up Gaaaaaaaaaaaahlic”. I was so sad when it was discontinued.

I find Carbone is as good as Rao’s, for a splurge sauce. I will stock up on some Rao’s, regardless.

The best canned/jarred tomato product I ever had was Cento Passata product of San Marzano, DOP. I had it many years ago but I haven’t seen it in a long while.

Exactly.

Much ado about nothing.

If anything, this is actually a good thing.

It allows Rao’s to have access to more shelf space at grocery stores. Which, if you like Rao’s, is a good thing.

Deep breath, the sky is not falling.

Me too. Good tomatoes, and I’ll use smaller cuts of beef, pork and lamb that will fall apart cooking. little dark red wine and garlic and I put it in my toaster oven for 45 to an hour. Shred the meat and I’m ready. I’ll also throw in a bone if I have it. The little fat that comes off the meat and bone are welcome. Kind of the old school way.

I just buy the whole ones (which are available almost anywhere)… that way I can chop, crush, or blend/liquify them depending on what I need. Great stuff!

FWIW- I’m not sure which post or where I saw it but there was a link to an article where a group of chefs reviewed a bunch of jarred pasta sauces. They ranked Rao’s #2 and Mutti Marinara #1. I use Mutti Polpa and whole tomatoes a lot in my own sauces but hadn’t noticed the Marinara as it’s in the huge jarred sauce section and is barely noticeable.

Used the Mutti last night with penne, chicken and zucchini……. it was EXCELLENT!!! Certainly as good as Rao’s, if not better. Rao’s at Costco is a much better buy though.

So let Campbell’s do what it’s gonna do. I’m prepared.

I haven’t tried their Marinara but I use Mutti for everything else, including canned cherry tomatoes and triple strength tomato paste.

I also like Mutti Passata. Try to always have a couple of Bottles in the Pantry.

Is it wrong to eat jarred marina sauce without heating as a college student?

I suppose only if you think eating cold pizza is wrong too. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Nice to see some Mutti love here! It’s sold in the supermarkets here. Not sure if I’ve tried their ready made sauces, but often buy the 2x and 3x paste tubes. The 2x is nice and sweet. Will stock up with more Mutti soon enough

Sometimes I see some Mutti items in the supermarket , but I order all of mine from an online Italian grocery.

Finally tried the Carbone sauce (only what? a year and a half after I came across it ? :joy:).

It’s good, but a lot more tart / intense than either Rao’s or Il Mulino.

The spicy vodka sauce version was actually really spicy (vs Rao’s arrabbiata which I prefer over their marinara).

I might buy it if it were on deep sale, but given that Rao’s goes on sale pretty regularly, I’ll stick to that (or Il Mulino, which I thought was about on par).

Indeed. I found it at a village “Penny Pinchers” remainder store at $2.00. Foolishly only bought one.
