Does anyone remember that period in the mid- late 80’s when drivers were getting shot on the LA freeways? When I moved there from New York around that time, I remember sitting on the 405 and thinking *I totally get it. "
I think it was because in NY, on roads like the LIE, you could convince yourself it was going to get better around the next bend. On the 405, you could see what you were in for.
I also have wondered over the years if people in Toronto were such jerks on the road because they don’t fear getting shot. I have typical found Californian drivers so much friendlier than Toronto drivers, even when stuck in gridlock.
The last few times I visited California, I had the joy of crossing LA (from the Grapevine across LA then south to La Jolla, and another time from the Grapevine to Beverly Hills) and the Bay Area (from Santa Rosa to Orinda to Salinas, and another time from Sonoma to Los Gatos) during rush hour.
No rude drivers.
I had interactions with 3 rude drivers over 2 days in 423 000 person London, Ontario last week .
Once it’s actually pointed out where the complaints come from and who they’re inevitably complaining about, it shows just who it is that has the problem.
This is a surprise to no one whose been paying even a little attention.
Am reminded when my young son told me to stop buying him alligator shirts. “Why?” “Because I don’t like the kind of people who wear them.”
I feel the same way about vocal fry. The sound bothers me less than the speakers themselves.

I haven’t been around too many people who complain about vocal fry, maybe 4 or 5 over the years, but they’ve all been women, complaining about women.
The worst one was a new general counsel we got rammed down our throats due to a merger in the MegaCorpGroup above us (we were a smaller subsidiary).
She personally interviewed all the lawyers, even flying in to visit my smaller team at our satellite location, on a mission to see how many heads she could cut. Overall our full department had about 50 lawyers and I think her target for this first run was 5% or more.
The next week, 3 lawyers were shown the door. All three were women who always spoke with heavy fry.
So did our new GC.
I think this was a lot like the situation where only the boss gets to use a red ink pen.
Anyway, she was awful in a lot of ways (an awful person - she was a crackerjack as a lawyer, though), so I (and many others) were pretty happy when she got a better offer at another bigcorp a couple of years later.
