What's on your mind? (2024)

Happiness is a pot of beans with a ham shank cooking slowly in the oven, making the house smell wonderful.

So I’m not much of a Facebook user. I have a modest number of friends. I’m in two groups, one for my coop - these people are varying degrees of normal, but they post in what I consider to be a fairly normal fashion. And another for people who grew up in NJ. Here, I’m seeing some weird Facebook “language,” ways of communicating that I don’t see elsewhere.

For instance, apparently a thing one does in order to get a conversation going is to throw down a gauntlet like this: “I’m Positive You Will Not Know What This ls.” What it is, is a picture of the NY/NJ divide in the Lincoln Tunnel. Now this is on a board for people who grew up in NJ. Would any of us NOT know what this is? Akin to this is those posts that seem to be using reverse psychology and daring you to prove them wrong: “Most won’t re-post this” or “Only my friends will like this.”

But I have a favorite, which seems to be some sort of metastatic marketing scheme. Did you know how may autistic offspring are designing clothing and how many proud parents are honestly amazed by their great work? Me, neither.

Is there some sort of Facebook style guide?

Broken link, and I have no idea what a “style guide” for Fb might entail (I’m pretty active there).

The link works fine for me (but you might have to be a member of a particular group to see the list), and I was being facetious about the style guide. But here’s a few screen grabs to show you what I’m talking about.

Might be Trojan horses :woman_shrugging:t3:

Either way, I am not at all aMAZed by “their” work :joy:

What is this?

Sometimes it’s not autistic sons. Sometimes it’s 14-year-old daughters.

I sharpened my knives without freaking out!

Except for the boning knife. :grimacing:

It may not be the correct term (nothing turned up in a google search), but it’s when you share a public post (often missing people or pets) on your page, and the entity with which that post originated changes the content after the fact, for promotional or other purposes.

Huh. One of the administrators of the NJ page has put up an “autistic son” post and is also taking down comments that raise an eyebrow about it. So I’m not sure what’s going on. Also, I’m not really that interested. I just wondered about the FacebookSpeak patterns I’m starting to see.

Well, judging from its prevalence and identical wording, I’m guessing it’s spam :woman_shrugging:

I went to town yesterday to stock up so I could ride out this bomb cyclone or atmospheric river or what ever it is that is supposed to come ashore tonight and hang around for a few days. If you never hear from me again I’m probably out there in the Pacific ocean floating around on my water bed. You know that might be the best place to be right now. Or I probably just lost power.

I hope you stay safe and it is not as intense as predicted. Take care!

It is that intense. Power outages, downed trees, lotsa water and still coming down.

Good luck & I hope you continue to be safe. I have a Fb friend who’s off the coast of Seattle, and things are looking cray!

@ChristinaM and @linguafood. Thanks for checking on me, so far so good. Power went out at 9:15 last night, it was back on when I woke up at 5:00. I have a Coleman lantern so I went to bed and read.

Stay safe. We in NW NW Washington got hit, but right where we are, there were actually no high winds and no power outages. This morning there was a max tide, so we had battened down. But we dodged the customary bullet.
