I think you’re thrifty!

And who cares what a bunch of folk on the internet think ?

I wish HO had a superlike button…

In fact, perhaps we should have a “cheapskate food buys” brag thread? Kind of like the thrifting finds thread for kitchen gear.

I’d like to know more about how you made these.

I am constantly checking the meat/fish counter for 50% off items. Whatever I buy gets cooked right away or put up in the freezer.

I used Campari and tonic as I had no Aperol or bubbles.

For just the two of us, we keep a medium-sized chest freezer in our basement so that we can take advantage of sales and mark-downs, as well as squirrel away things we make in big batches. Then we also freeze things from the garden and our fish and shellfish bounty from summer for winter days. I wouldn’t want to be without it.

Vietnamese Noodle Salad with Shrimp, nuoc cham dressing. I glazed the precooked shrimp in a little sweet chile sauce. Rice noodles, cabbage, carrot, cuke, snow peas. Herbs were a mix of cilantro, basil, mint.

I accidentally made a pink gin & tonic. I made tonic ice cubes in the same tray as my Campari spritz cubes and there was a little spill over.

I am an in and out type shopper. Get what I need and go. My husband on the other hand likes to mosey around. And he does find good deals. Then we argue in the car later on.:slightly_smiling_face:

Garlicky grilled shrimp Caesar, with homemade baguette.

For dessert there will be homemade blueberry tarts.

We returned from a very taxing 4-day trip to my hometown for my mom’s memorial coffee & cake, followed by crashing down south with my sis and BIL for the burial of her urn on Monday.

It was very emotional to see so many people show up to celebrate and commemorate our mother, who was beloved by colleagues and many a racket sports partner, and who also recognized her more trying traits. Stories of her organizing social outings – be it for Mardi Gras or having people over for mulled wine in the winter, or making group dinner plans at COPs for the UN Climate Secretariat during which she visited more countries than I ever will made me recognize how similar we are in this regard – not to mention how many people commented on our striking resemblance. Hearing that she proudly shared each and every of my recordings & published translations with others close to her was a pleasant surprise, especially since she wasn’t very good at showing me.

Monday was difficult, not the least thx to my sociopathic BIL who added unnecessary stress & anguish to an already tough day. Instead of trying to smooth things over, my sis doubled down on the gaslighting…. our last visit down south, that’s for sure.

And so, we are tremendously relieved to be back in Berlin after a long train ride. Did a load of laundry while checking out the Chinese place down the road: char siu, pork belly, roast duck & water spinach plus two large beers hit the spot. G&Ts at home with a local gin helped soothe our nerves.

Hugs to you. Your mom sounds pretty amazing and sis/BIL total asses.

Weekend meals! Steak, corn ribs, macncheese and broccoli. Probably going to have to find a better way to chop the corn.

And some chicken tikka with homemade naan. Naan came out a little too oily but the chicken and tikka were perfect.

I definitely inherited her social gene, but she also had a very stubborn, petty, unforgiving side to her. We had a very … eventful relationship with one another :frowning:

My BIL’s assholery shouldn’t have come as a surprise, although I thought he just might be able to keep it in check on the day we lay our mother to rest. Apparently not.

As for my sister, I have to believe she’s been around his toxicity for so long she thinks it’s perfectly normal and acceptable behavior. Our father was similar in many ways, and she “dealt” (and deals) with it by complete dissociation and gaslighting.

I should’ve listened to my PIC when he suggested we stay at a hotel. Oh, well. It’s over, TFG.

I’m glad you had your PIC with you for what sounds like a very trying few days. The recovery dinner sounds delicious!

He is my rock & my everything. I would be completely and utterly lost without him <3

Last night’s dinner was a partial fail… Sunshine and I found some coarse ground pork on clearance, so I grabbed it. Initially, I didn’t know what I would make with it, but Sunshine asked if I could make something similar to a “Sausage Meatloaf” that I make from time to time. Unfortunately, this coarse ground pork didn’t hold together like sausage and my meatloaf slices fell apart as I took them out of the loaf pan. The taste was there, but NOT the presentation. As for the leftovers, Sunshine usually likes leftover cold meatloaf sandwiches the next day, but I think we may have to opt for a hot open face meatloaf sandwich, instead.
