What's For Dinner #95 - the Hot Fun in the Summertime Edition - July 2023

Hey, that’s what I’m doing at this very minute! Except with a slow and sear on the weber, and a 3lb pork butt. It will be wfd tonight, and if history is any guide, there will be almost nothing left after I discard the big fat chunks and the four of us attack it. Work from home is very conducive to this type of activity. Mine also smokes for about 8 hrs and gets nice and black on the outside.

I believe that was Chartwells, to which our school nutrition program was just outsourced. They are bad news.

At least no one gets scurvy on their watch. (Link is paywalled.)

Well, I work several shit-paying jobs - I drive for Uber, sing in a band (cuz big bucks in the music biz ), am a chronically underemployed freelance translator & also run a personal grocery shopping service that I really need to advertise more when I get back, so I’m flex with my time. My PIC is an academic & happens to be on sabbatical until the fall of next year…but even when he isn’t, summers are “off” for research and/or finishing up book projects. No kids, no college to pay - all we need to do each summer is find a house/cat sitter

It is certainly not sustainable in the long run, but we’ll live it up as long as we can. #YOLO n@

100% do it till you can’t do it no more! Mine was a college prof, so summers off. But again, that’s when I was full time in office and kids in school. Now that I’m full time wfh, kids about to be out of school, he switched to industry. The timing sucks for us. As my colleague said, we’ll have to stick with the 2 week (aggressive) vacays. Honestly, not that it’s easy to afford more. I guess if you’re renting a flat by the month

Thank you!

I thought I was responding to your comment “Keepin’ it real with my horrendous lack of plating skills.” You have mad skills.

I’ll have to add that to my list of places to go when I’m in Edison. We tend to stick to 3 different places depending upon the vibe we’re going for when we’re in that area.

I know the local spot your are referring to has great meaning to you. It’s always sad when a favorite place starts to slip.

T’was I posting about cherry pies in response to your remark (and therefore on the wrong thread).

Thanks for the links

I have a stone and a cast iron pizza “stone” but everything I read had you put the dough directly on the grate for 1-2 minutes and then flip it for the toppings. Since I often make pizzas in my regular oven I wanted more of the grill effect (plusI worked my way thru college making pizzas). I had some problems getting the dough the right size as I have one of the smaller sized grills and I was using a larger peel. I still need to work on having the right amount of coals to maintain the right temperature.

Ah! Too bad we can’t delete our own threads! There’ve been a few I totally missed the boat on.

I remember my cousin telling me it was possible to eat Meyer lemons like they are fruit. Not in my experience.

:grimacing: :lemon: :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

From Epicurious, a two-ingredient lemon sauce recipe.

To paraphrase: “Nothing more than whole Meyer lemons blended into submission with a bit of simple syrup…”

Tonight I had mac and cheese over a vegetarian chili I had made and brought to my friends last week. Tonight I made them a vegetarian Thai Penang tofu curry with carrots, zucchini, and garden broccoli and jasmine rice. For their kids I made angel hair alla crudaiola, which my husband and son also ate for dinner.

It does, and, it does. Different people in the FOH, but still nice as can be. I still think they are related to the original owners. We ordered from there Mother’s Day and it was spectacular l but in a matter of a month there has been a marked difference, and not for the better.

That was quite an article you wrote. Has the question been decided yet? You can always make your son’s lunch. For years I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every single school day.

It has. Unfortunately they voted to outsource (although our campaign did seem to help sway at least one member, who voted nay.) And I suspect that the calls and emails also encouraged the BOE to push for late contract revisions. It helps to know folks are watching and engaged.

The point wasn’t so much the food not being good enough for my kiddo so much as that 1) better wasn’t guaranteed ; 2) nor was any cost savings and 3) the sacrifices/harms in terms of employment conditions, local oversight and community investment and equity are not worth it.
