What's for Dinner #9, 5/2016 - the "Don't Cast a Clout" edition

My run down for the past few days:

Saturday: Had my parents and my brother and his family over for a pre-Mother’s Day dinner. Got king crab legs and wild shrimp from the Costco Seafood counter, and also some nice looking ribeyes. Marinated the shrimp (shell on, deveined) in a quick marinade of olive oil, minced garlic, chopped parsley and oregano, a bit of tomato paste and S&P. Ribeyes were just S&P. Grilled everything up (including the crab legs, just to warm them). Served with grilled corn on the cob, homemade mac and cheese and melted butter and lemon. Cheesecake and fresh berries for dessert.

Sunday: Grilled some BBQ baby back ribs. Made a simple garlic mashed potato topped with cheddar cheese and baked until slightly brown, and some roasted cauliflower.

Monday: Dinner courtesy of my aunt (who used to own an indian restaurant) – a spicy indian goat curry with naan and sliced cucumber and onion salad.

Tuesday: In N Out! Double Double, animal style for me. Shared a couple orders of Animal style fries between the 4 of us too.

Wednesday: School fundraiser at Souplantation – not my first choice, but we try to support the fundraisers. I had a bit plate of salad, a cup of clam chowder and a piece of cornbread and I was good.

Last week I said I was going to make a photo of aubergines so here it is. Had a BBQ today, nothing you haven’t seen before. We at all 2kg of asparagus this week alone (7,5kg thus far!). Getting more from the farm for this Pentecost long weekend.

I use pounded fresh turmeric in oil in many things, here it is brushed on the aubergine slices. Added dried Greek thyme to the quark but it wasn’t enough so I threw in some dill as well. Pomegranate seeds are not only delicious but also pretty.

2 of my top 3 vegs are seen in this photo

Still cheaper than what I pay in NYC, although not as cheap as I generally see them in Berlin. I was lamenting the price of leeks with a leek-loving American friend of mine and she said that she rarely cooks them lately because her fiance, who is Welsh, doesn’t care for them as they remind him of growing up poor in Wales. One person’s trash…

Burgers. Brioche buns. Ketchup, Dijon mustard, shallot, tomato.

But only me.

Herself is in London today with a couple of friends - gone to watch a show. I’m just off to collect them from the train station - she said she’d get a snack on the train.

NotJr…This looks so good
I see this chicken dish on Italian American restaurant menus on occasion, usually
listed as chef’s specialty. Unfortunately the dish is rarely done well. I guess striking
the right balance is not as easy as it seems. When it is, done right, it is so, so good.

Couple of easy things we do with them.

First, split lengthways and put in a baking dish, but side up. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with parmesan. Bake.

Second, for thin leeks. Wrap in ham and put in baking dish. Top with cheese sauce. Bake. This is a lovely lightish main course.

LOL. I just read this a couple of days ago. He’s hilarious.

Mmmm, that sounds delicious! I’ll have to remember that when my first crop comes in. We have an accepted offer on a house (our first, after almost 15 years in a 1BR apartment!) so if all goes well, I could have gardening space by August. Wonder if that’s enough time to get a crop in before it gets too cold???

Back in the city (NYC) taking my daughter to look at a few venues for her upcoming 21st birthday. (Where did the time go??)

Anywho when in Rome means dinner at Empire Steakhouse.

I usually don’t buy tipalia but had a bag of Costco frozen I bought for gefilte fish a few weeks back. Didn’t taste muddy like some I’ve had. Just dressed it with sliced peppers and olives.

I’m sure it tasted good, it looks beautiful…but don’t eat that
shit fish it is bad, bad, bad for you :frowning:
This is not a finger pointing response, it is an out of concern response.

I thought Costco’s sourcing was from Latin America and was totally safe. No?

What pray tell is “morel cream sauce” please? I may weep when you tell me

Life is good, eh?

Leftovers; After dealing with health insurance . More beer please .

New job is intense with some long hours that likely won’t change any time soon…
But i hate eating dinner at work so i need something fast when i walk in the door at 9pm or so.
Last night was a big bowl of smacked cucumbers with edamame and a handful of spinach, hard cider a la carte.
Tonight I wasn’t very hungry (ok, so maybe those peanut butter pretzels at 6pm had something to do with it). Made my favorite smoothie- cucumber, cilantro, frozen pineapple and half a grapefruit with a few ice cubes. Side of greek yogurt with more cilantro, and some salted sunflower seeds

Leftover Hazan’s green lasagna and arugula, slow roasted grape tomatoes, toasted pine nuts and garlic vinaigrette.

That’s what I read as well. It’s not something I usually buy but figured it would work well for a ground bland fish application in the gefilte fish.

@chowdom, I drink, smoke cigars and spend time in the sun. So I accept some toxins and radiation in my daily life. I do stay away from Fox News. Got to draw the line somewhere
