What's For Dinner #65 - the Brand New New Year's Edition - January 2021

Indian for dinner tonight.

  • Chicken kheema with peas
  • Okra for the adults
  • Green beans for the kids
  • Cauliflower for all
  • Three dals from last week via the freezer
  • And a new entrant - GF naan for the kids, because I felt like experimenting.

The naans actually turned out surprisingly soft.

And I forgot to take a picture of anything because we were sooooo hungry tonight!

Celebratory dinner at sister’s on this fabulous day - first Dungeness crab from Costco. Very fat, meaty and super sweet. Sold as steamed clusters instead of whole. Homemade buttered pasta, and a Thai sweet chili butter for the crab. A CA sparkling viognier to go

Burgers and tater tots, salad and corn/edamame with sparkling rose.
For dessert – chocolate cake to celebrate the dawn of a new day.

Wanna hear a story about last night’s dinner?

BF had the day off and I was working my normal late shift. He said I would come home to his amazing sweet Thai chili short ribs, which he sears and then puts in the slow cooker. He has made this several times, which I have posted. I walked in the door and the house smelled amazing. I made myself a martini and him a Negroni (more on that later). We chatted for a bit and then I started on the Jasmine rice. A few minutes later I decide to take a peak at the short ribs. They were burnt. Charred. Incinerated. So far gone that you could actually hear a scraping sound as I tried to move one. Naturally, he started to freak out wondering what happened since he has made this same exact recipe many times. Finally we realized that the setting was on high, not low as normal. A simple unnoticeable mistake. We wondered if even though beyond well-done would it still be edible. The answer was no. By this time, it was so late that the only food ordering option was Dominos. I hate it. He tolerates it. But we ordered a medium pie and some cheesy bread. I woke up with a stomach ache. (I had chicken cutlets defrosting but they are for tonight’s dinner)

As for the Negroni, he has really cut back on drinking the last few weeks but wanted something last night. Bored with the usuals, he asked if I could make him something complex and new. I don’t know why, but I thought of a Negroni. At his first sip, his nose wrinkled and lips pursed. Through different sips, he switched back and forth between like and dislike. He settled on the latter. Ironically I feel the same way. While my idol Anthony Bourdain loved the Negroni, I could never get into them. Whenever I get excited to make one for myself, it ends in disappointment. I’ve had this bottle of Campari for like five years and I think I’ll have it five more.

The first time I heard the name was in a Richard Pryor skit about Italians and eating and I thought he made the name up until I heard it a second time somewhere else… this is only the third. :relaxed: Where do you get it?

Happens. My sympathies.

Don’t’ know how I missed this when you posted it but can you fill me in a bit on those lamb chops, they look fantastic. Also nice Amarone, my personal favorite wine variety. My all time favorite wine would be a Bertani Amerone, I bought a bottle on the day of each of my children’s birth - and saved them for their “first toast” on their 21st birthday. My daughters (oldest) went bad, but my son’s made it!! I’m not familiar with Bennati, but will keep an eye our for it. (recently discoverd a Tommasi Valpolicella that is very reasonable and I like)

Thank you.

I prepared them for my Dear and 2 Grandsons.

Best wishes during these highly challenging times.

ugh on the ribs!!! and also on the Dominos.

i do love Negronis, but I tend to like the ones with a little more sweet than bitter. Just a tad more. maybe you should try swinging a little sweeter?

they’re called Toadfish crab claw cutters, recommended by a couple people on another food group. They work pretty well on the Dungeness, not well at all on snow crab legs (too bendy). Only problem is they’re heavy and a bit tiresome to wield, but they do make very nice, clean cuts, so it’s easier to fish out big chunks of meat. and these fattos had a ton of meat.

I’m not a fan of Negronis either, but I love a tall Campari and soda - very refreshing. My sympathies on your ribs!

Those lamb chops were fantastic @NotJrvedivici. They were so tender. They were pistachio crusted.
That Amarone was fantastic. It received one score of 97 points. I got it on sale at Wine Library for a ridiculous price of $29.99. I just bought a case. It is now going for $45.

Not eating outside food is finally wearing me down. A kind of anorexia is setting in, as in lack of interest in food. Plodding along tonight, grilled zucchini with red pepper relish and creme fraiche with heritage pork, Momofuku sauce.
One more down, how many to go…

After last night’s fiasco, we went with something simple: chicken parm. For the sauce, I used a jar that I will not name which was sent to me to review for my blog-- a local/Jersey company. It was bland as anything and needed a lot of doctoring to merely be passable. More on that later.

Kheema chole over brown rice (actually a mix of chickpeas and white beans) with roasted masala cauliflower and potato alongside (an oven roasted deconstructed aloo gobi)). TJ’s mini chicken samosas with homemade coriander/mint chutney as an app.

I’ve done Campari and soda with orange juice and that was probably the most i enjoyed it.

I love gin. I enjoy sweet vermouth. I think Campari smells fantastic. But combined, not a fan.
