:::jaw drop:::
I figured that but it still isn’t gonna happen. I’ll just lick the screen.
these are some of the things i’ve been eating this bday weekend - mine AND the BF’s. first my sister and I went out on Sat., Trou Normand: charcuterie/salumi. on the far right, the first consisted of a very mild salami - rosette de lyon; next, finocchiona - a wonderful fennel salami; then lardo, my favorite, with citrus notes; and ciccioli, an Italian version of pork rillettes - scrumptious. The accoutrements - almond spiced “granola,” fresh peaches with the best ricotta I’ve ever tasted, whole grain mustard, and pickled turnips and to-die-for kimchi’d cauli. Everything was made/butchered/cured in-house.
We also split buttery, soft scrambled duck eggs with chanterelles, oxalis, and charred levain - OMFG. And also the best porchetta I’ve ever had, with a pickled cactus-plant of some kind, and sweet blackberries.
Dessert was a peach leaf panna cotta with peach compote and puffed wild rice - ok, but panna cotta overwhelmed everything else.
We (my sister’s treat to all this) also had cocktails, bubbles, and a shot each of Armagnac, on the house.

:Then, the BF’s bday dinner last night, Peruvian:
Ceviche sampler
anticuchos (marinated/grilled beef heart, a favorite since I was a kid (we’re Bolivian but both countries make this dish)) and yuca fries.
causa de cangrejo - a cold, lemony, slightly spicy mashed potato dish often paired with different seafoods - here, crab - and always served in this tower form.
Churrasco - Bistek a lo pobre - a NY steak paired here with an egg (“a lo pobre,” which refers to a “peasant” preparation - adding an egg stretches out the meal), and toasted quinoa.
All so good. and then, a walk along the beach, in Pacifica…
maybe someday i’ll get back in the kitchen again…
Wow! You sure know how to celebrate a birthday in style! Happy birthday to both of you! Everything looks delicious.
You can always stop by the NY area for 1 day on your way to Paris
Organic ground beef Stroganoff with seared oyster mushrooms over whole wheat rotini. Butter lettuce salad with orange-herb vinaigrette. We all dug in.
BF’s actual bday was today, and I thought for sure he’d just want a burrito or for me to cook leftovers. But he chose our new favorite pizza place - yay for me! and we got an outdoor table on this gorgeous night - unbelievable. AND he went all out and ordered TWO pizzas: Rosemary sausage with Gaeta olives, and pepperoni with pickled peppers. Also the stone fruit/burrata salad i loved so much last time. All fantastic. I had a couple glasses of a very dry, delicious lambrusco. BF got a piece of crappy chocolate mousse cake from the Chinese bakery on the way home, so all is right in the world.
Nice!
As if we didn’t have enough sodium at Dave & Busters the other night… I made Crispy Beef for dinner tonight. It was delicious.
Recipe please!!!
My Ukrainian grandmother made the same salad…and I had it last night!
Just moved to a new house last Friday…Kitchen house up in the air…hopefully will get back in the groove soon…but did make my first omelet in the new place this morning.
Gladly @gcaggiano
Use any kind of steak (lean or fatty). I used a thin cut Ribeye called San Lucas w/most fat trimmed. If using thick cut pound to 1/4” thick. Cut into strips.
STEAK:
1lb Steak (1/4” thick, cut in strips)
3 Tbsp Corn Starch
Fill Wok or Cast Iron halfway w/Peanut or Grapeseed oil, heat on high-temp (about 350)
Toss Meat w/2 Tbls Corn Starch until it absorbs in the meat, then toss w/1 Tbls right before frying.
Fry in batches until golden brown (2-3 mins), longer if you like it a bit chewy (like jerky).
SAUCE:
Usually it’s heated Sweet Chili Sauce, Light Soy Sauce & OJ.
I had no Sweet Chili Sauce - Made a slurry w/Soy Sauce, Rice Vinegar, OJ, Water, Garlic, Honey, Sambal Oelek, Sriracha, bit of Corn Starch (sorry no measurements). Heat until thickened, then toss & coat beef in the sauce.
Serve w/Rice or Noodles & Steamed Veggies or on a Green Salad splashed w/Rice Vinegar. Garnish w/Orange Peel & Scallions. It’s a very easy & versatile dish.
Yum!
Thank you!
Man, crappy and chocolate mousse cake are words that should never be in the same sentence! But if those pizzas aren’t perfection, I don’t know what is! Happy birthday to both of you!!
I made a brown rice bowl concoction with grilled chicken, grilled zucchini, some BBQ sauce, some cheese and a ton of corn, tomato, cilantro, lime, red onion salsa.
We’ve had this magazine recipe in the “must try” file for ages. So, all this lot goes into a roasting tin - pork mince, sausage meat, tomato puree, chilli flakes, fennel seeds, sage leaves, Worcestershire sauce, olive oil, parmesan S & P, finely diced celery, onion and garlic. It cooks at 180 for 30 minutes. In the meantime, dried porcini mushrooms have soaked in chicken stock. These now go in along with fresh mushrooms, cream, pasta (recipe suggests paccheri, so paccheri it is) and more oil. It all gets mixed in, trying to get as much pasta as possible into the sauce. It cooks for another 45 minutes, stirring a couple of times to make sure all the pasta is getting cooked. When it’s just about ready, rocket gets stirred through.
As it’s served, there’s a topping of capers, parsley, lemon zest and juice and even more oilive oil. And, finally, some Parmesan shavings.
I think it sounds dead tasty but the key to success is making sure the pasta cooks. Fingers crossed - otherwise dinner will turn into a Deliveroo night.
