Not much in my fridge at the moment, perfect timing my friend (my favorite six year old’s mom) asked if i wanted to come over for sushi delivery dinner so she could bribe me to feed the fish while they’re on vacation.
Ha! I’m cheap and easy so that was settled  we shared edamame, assorted veggie rolls, that chilled spinach dish with sesame, and a tofu salad seaweed thing.
Fish feeding duty seems straightforward enough, i told her she can pay me in good coffee beans.

My parents arrive tomorrow night!!! so probably not much in the way of meals at home but i’ll post anything worthy

Thanks @mariacarmen: they were really meaty, delicious ribs! So meaty that 2-3 was enough. I was really surprised because they were just a Safeway product: Farmer John, “California Natural”, St. Louis Style Ribs. Pulled the back membrane, dry rubbed & on the Weber kettle with charcoal & some apple wood chips for about 3 hours at approx 250, a challenge on a Weber kettle, but my DH prevailed with damper control  Think I’ll some again this weekend…

Got out of work a bit earlier tonight to do some personal stuff. Getting home at 5:15 was rather nice.

Dinner tonight was a bone-in pork chop seasoned with s/p and minced rosemary, pan-seared with onions, mushrooms and garlic. Poured in a cup of pork stock, let it simmer, simmer, simmer, reduce, reduce, reduce, and then mounted with a Tbsp of butter and a smidge of heavy cream for a sauce.

Sides were steamed then roasted potatoes with s/p and Penzeys Sunny Spain seasoning, and some steamed green beans.

Yup.
It’s Wine Thursday.

Some food porn for you

Charred Octopus from Carson Kitchen.
There’s a few dishes I’ll never attempt at home and this is one of them. The octopus was so flavorful and tender, I’m drooling just thinking about it. It was served with fingerling potatoes and aioli.

That asparagus is drool worthy!

I buy the fresh cauli rice in the produce section and, yes it is cheaper than buying heads of cauliflower.

It was almost sweet! Perfect chilled with the bit of salt…

Chicken thighs “kashmiri” with jarred Aldi sauce, peas, mushrooms, and cauli rice. Very decent and a fast meal. No pic, oops.

Welcome to NYC with the parents at my favoritest wine bar in the city, Terroir. The (seriously cute) server suggested this fantastic cider from Brittany, France when i asked for a “unique and slightly sweet” one. Apparently they leave the apple skins on…? Dunno, he talked about it a bit more but i may have been hypnotized by his long eyelashes… :joy:

I had already eaten by the time we met, a balanced meal that included a pile of sugar snap peas and the best garlic knots maybe ever that i may or may not have taken a bike ride to get because i had a random craving. And it seemed like a proper prize for six miles round trip.

Seriously, it’s this place, on the UES near the 6 train at 77th (honestly never had the pizza because cheese, but can’t say enough about the accidentally vegan knots!)

Mom and dad went with some kind of fancy beers and ordered this pretty chicken liver toast thing (haha, there were two but dad nabbed one before the photo), and to my slight horror they actually did order the rabbit (!) sandwich- which thankfully didn’t look like Little Bunny FooFoo.
So, whatever makes you happy! They were both enthusiastic about the dishes and ready for a good nights sleep when i dropped them off at my friend’s place where they are staying.

Why is that? It’s not hard to achieve tender octopus. There are enough resources online if you want to learn how to SV octopus. IIRC you do have a sous vide device, yes? Use it to cook octopus. There are very few creatures from the sea worth cooking SV but octopus/tentacles are an exception. Try it!

Cuttlefish is also good cooked SV.

After octopus you might also want to give curing egg yolks a go… haha.

Picture from yesterday evening. Getting the table ready for the final iftar of Ramadan.

Today is Eid, the day marking the end of Ramadan. I.e., the day you gain back all the weight you lost during Ramadan. We just finished Eid prayers and now have at least 3 relatives’ houses to visit, with snacks and meals at every stop. First, we’ll stop by school to share our attire with the kid’s class. It’s the last day of school, too, so everyone should be in a great mood.

First stop: Seviyan, dahi phulkian, samosa, macaroni from our Afghani neighbors, munaka dried fruit from Afghanistan (also from our neighbors), an assortment of homemade Moroccan cookies, and a random container with ladoo and gulab jamun. (And chai, of course.)

I do have a SV, I have yet to open it, I’ve been enamored by my smoker.

Where would I get octopus? I’ve seen some frozen at the Chinese market, but if I remember my childhood correctly, it’s like shoe leather. I heard you have to pulverize it into submission? Let me do more research.
