A rainy and decidedly chillier day was perfect for catching up with my sis after a couple of weeks, catching up on NYers after…. a Sisyphean year’s worth of issues now, and polishing my translation so I can send it off tomorrow. Deadline is 4/17, but why wait?
I also picked up 10 fresh eggs from my buddy while out getting fixins for tonight’s dinner — @LindaWhit and I seemed to be on the same wavelength: seared local duck titties with a spicy kumquat / pomegranate reduction, hot crash potatoes from the AF,
and escarole with blue cheese, walnuts, and a tart & fruity vinaigrette with a fab pear balsamic I picked up in Philly, ½ a finely diced shallot, walnut mustard, and walnut oil.
The duck was a little less perfect than @LindaWhit’s — closer to medium than we would’ve preferred, but it was very flavorful, and that sauce had a nice kick to it — almost (but not quite) qualifying this meal for Sssspicy Sssssunday.
The last hunka ekmek from the Greek place in Lancaster will be our decadent dessert … once we’re not completely stuffed anymore, which may well be tomorrow
Wonderfully festive dinner for what’s just a regular Sunday @casa lingua

Looks delicious! Is that a bunny sugar bowl I spy? Adorable!

I accidentally deleted my own post so let’s try again! Easter dinner was ham with scalloped potatoes and mixed veggies paired with apple cider.
Dessert was cheesecake with Lady Grey tea.

Frijoles Charros (spicey hot dog and bean soup) courtesy of NYT (gift link).
This was too much fun and made too much sense. Beans, tomatoes, onion, garlic, bacon, hot dogs, and HOT SAUCE. I used Hebrew Nationals and a homemade serrano pepper sauce from last year’s harvest. Canned tomatoes instead of fresh. Canned beans.
Served with home-fried tortilla chips and diced avocado.
A full batch gave plenty of leftovers for the freezer (a good thing).

Decorative Avon bunny has always been used as a (wrapped) candy dish here, sometimes with shredded cellophane Easter “grass” under the candy.. But it would make a superb sugar bowl - thanks for the idea.

I opened the doors on this beautiful spring day to air out the house. When I went to close up I found a hummingbird, bees, a tiny lizard and flies in my living room. I opened a window and removed the screen and rescued the hummer, I think the bees rescued themselves, the flies I killed and I don’t know where the lizard went.
My Easter dinner was risi e bisi, I used arborio rice and added a sprinkle of bacon bits; arugula, green onion, cucumber and radish salad with pesto dressing; deviled pickled eggs and lemon tonic.

I had to pivot to simplicity on our Easter dinner because that happens. Fortunately we’d picked up some tender asparagus at a farm stand (would love to know where they got it because it’s early for asparagus here). The asparagus paired beautifully with casarecce from our pasta stash—plus an improvised pan sauce involving olive oil, butter, parmesan, speck, and pasta cooking water—to bring springtime to the table.
Also fortunately, we’d already picked up a mini carrot cake that a local café owner graciously made for us because we wanted a smaller dessert than her holiday menu offered. The pretty frosting was a surprise. Warmed our hearts.

Right? If only I had those piping skills.

I can’t even properly fill a deviled egg

Pfffttt…I just use a spoon and hope most of the egg filling gets into the egg white cup. I don’t make enough hard-boiled eggs for deviled eggs to deal with piping.

Yeah, I generally just use a teaspoon, too. Won’t be as pretty, but I tried the piping attachment just with a lil plastic baggie and found it aggravating, to say the least. Fuck that.

It was!.
I always forget how easy it is to make.
I love the dish’s name, too
My mom used to make this, but without the egg. Probz easier without (?).
