What's for Dinner #128 - the Pastel Easter Egg Hunt Edition - April 2026

“Crashed Potato”

They’re a thing. I made them twice this last week

Curry sounds very interesting. Boulud has played with Indian Flavors quite a bit over the Years.

How are they different than Crushed Potatoes?

Oh I see they are exactly the same thing.

Funny, never heard them referred to as crushed — just smashed or crashed.

Either way, fun to make, not to mention delicious

I remember Jacques Pépin doing these years ago. I think that he called them “Crushed” but memory is a Bickle Fitch

Plus he’s French, soooo… all bets are off

I got the recipe from Pioneer Woman, but doubtless there are many predecessors.

Getting some stuff out of the freezer – assorted pasta sauces. I made whole wheat elbow macaroni with meat ragú, sauteed asparagus, and red cabbage slaw. Needing to grocery shop soon for veg.

Finally, a sssssssspicy meal at Casa Lingua — been far too long.

Mapo doufu with ground pork & TPSTO toasted & ground Sichuan peppercorns for an extra helping of ma la. My PIC pronounced it the best I’ve made so far, and I have to concur

A bowl of smashed cukes wasn’t my best effort for some reason, but still garlicky & very refresh.

We visited Big Boxville this week. Didn’t find much compelling to buy at TJ’s, outside of the usual boneless leg of lamb. Skipped World Market out of concern for our waistlines (good candy selection). At Costco we loaded up on protein, cooking oils, and butter.

WFD tonight was rotisserie chicken tacos with the usual: hard shells, seasoned meat and onions, cheddar, lettuce, avo, and a variety of sweet-hot and limey-hot sauces ( the winner: good ol’ chipotle mayo).

At my sister’s Saturday night, I made lamb lollipops (not as frenched as I would have liked) - marinated in fresh thyme, parsley, garlic, olive oil, s&p all day, then pan grilled. Delicious, if quite fatty (we ended up trimming most of the fat off before eating.) Still, really good. Fat steamed purple asparagus with butter, and a salad of beets, feta, TJ’s sweet pecans, and shallot on the side.

The BF made brunch Sunday - his first quiche ever (store-bought crust). Quiche Lorraine turned out swell. Loved the shallots at the bottom, just over the crust. Very rich and custardy. Sausage was all him. We ate half the quiche for brunch and the other half for dinner.

And I made us a beef and mushroom stew on Sunday for last night’s dinner:

With leftover bacon from the quiche, leeks, fresh thyme, red wine, Dijon, etc. Served with boiled taters. Turned out great for a chilly night, lots of leftovers.

Tonight I made Food & Wine’s super seedy kale salad with grilled chicken breast and a little TJ’s Harvest Blend that was simmered with bay leaf and green goddess seasoning. Tasty!

Tonight I had chicken ginger rice from recipetineats. The only arromatics used was soy sauce, fish sauce, ginger and garlic and it could have used way more seasonings. I think I will try the Woks of Life version next time.
