What's for Dinner #127 - the It's Madness! Edition - March 2026

Our friends who just sold their house to live in NYC permanently had a … household dissolution (?) party last night with many friends. There was a raffle where we each drew a couple of numbers to take a few final items off their hands. We both lucked out in our choices in that we got the only food/drink-related items: I got 3 different pickling kits & a huge bag o’ bean soup, plus the hostess specially gifted me a beautiful blue & gold glass that says “Mazel Tov, Bitches.” I feel seen

My PIC scored a bunch of wine glasses, this awesome “book bundle” that hides a liquor bottle and 4 shot glasses, :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

and a ginormous, beautiful serving plate.

No dinner really to speak of — there was a plate with cheeses and salamis, guac & chips, cold pizza , and amazing cookies brought by our Lebanese friend (of course) with chocolate chips, nuts, granola… just fab.

We got home early and had the leftover garlic rice and some of the pork adobo.

LOVE the shot glass book bundle and serving plate! How lovely that your friends gave them away…fun way to do so.

Well, packing up a house one’s lived in for … 30+ (?) years yer bound to have a lot of stuff, and of course their Chelsea apt isn’t nearly as big, despite the fact that they bought the pad next door and expanded it significantly

I think that plate will be excellent for a big pasta party or a massive hunka (or chunksa) meat, like my PIC’s lamb kabobs

Man, am I gonna miss my pool time this summer at their digs :frowning:

It’s amazing what one can accomplish with too much time on one’s hands after “all” the mise is done

TBH I was rather proud of myself & actually kept that pic in my photo library. Most food shots I delete right after posting.

Wild sockeye salmon with a pomegranate molasses and grated fresh ginger glaze, baked at 375° for about 10-12 minutes.

A boxed couscous with dried cranberries, to which I added chopped pistachios, and sautéed baby spinach with s/p and Aleppo pepper.

Pomegranate arils on the salmon and pistachio dust (what’s left after chopping up a handful of pistachios) over everything.

There was wine.

Tonight we made my dad’s beef and barley soup using ground beef, extra veg, and kidney beans, served with sourdough discard focaccia from the freezer. Delish.

We enjoyed another outstanding dinner at Cafe Panache, in Ramsey, NJ, including Hokkaido scallop crudo; duck and foie gras agnolotti; crispy rice cracker crusted tuna; tuna tartare; halibut. It all went great with an excellent Malbec and red blend.

Pan-roasted chicken thighs. Shells in a creamy pesto sauce (mac-and-cheese for adults). Salad greens in vinaigrette. Delish!

Pizza π. Stonefire crust, alfredo sauce, caramelized onions, asparagus, koms, bacon, rosemary asiago cheese. Little gem, red onion, cucumber, avocado, radish salad, pesto dressing. Everything was delicious, I keep forgetting how much I like that dressing and the π was so good I ate the whole thing.

We had a fabulous gig tonight at the fancy-shmancy place — our last one for a few weeks until the benefit in early April for the local domestic violence shelter. We had a decent crowd considering it’s Spring Break, including a bunch of friends, and they all stayed till the end. My song about the dumb-ass diet industry was particularly popular :woman_dancing:t2:

It was a really fun show

I didn’t eat anything at the place bc $$$, so when we got home my PIC made me a delectable grilled cheese with mozzarell’, cheddar & Havarti that I obliterated in under 5 minutes :pig_nose:

and a Martinez nightcap bc he is the bestest :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Little lamb meatballs in tomato sauce with cavatapi. I love how the cavatapi traps the sauce inside.
