Mas soup.
We enjoyed another outstanding dinner at Lula in Ridgewood, NJ, including clam jam; duck leg confit; tuna tartare; bucatini alla limone; swordfish; fantastic focaccia. It all went great with a couple of excellent cabernets. The menu at the end gives all of the preparation details.
Fried shrimp with a chili, hot mustard dipping sauce. Fried cauliflower rice, WoL smashed cucumber salad. The cook had a Beefeater rocks with Tipsy Onions.
Tortilla español here. Simple, fast, and I’d been craving it for a while.
I cut corners and use pre-prepared hash browns and it becomes a 15-minute meal
i know… it’s hard. salty snacks are sooooo good!
my binge really amped up since Thxgiving, and I just found out today that not 7 mos ago my BP was totally at normal levels, so I’m totally blaming the overeating/epic salty snack eating i started over the holidays. But now i know how fast it is to do the damage. But, i ALSO now know how to undo that - how to keep it under control, and how not to get to that point again.
But YOU, young lady - don’t you give us another scare!!
All in moderation is our (new) middle names, lady!
xoxo
Chicken Meatballs, Potatoes, and Lemon from “Comfort” by Ottolenghi - the chicken meatballs are made with ground chicken, mint, scallions, cilantro, garlic, egg, grated potatoes, panko breadcrumbs and cumin. Pan-seared and than braised with potatoes, celery, onions, garlic, turmeric, cumin, cinnamon and sugar in chicken broth. Finished with some cilantro and served with yoghurt sauce (yoghurt, mint and cilantro) and some olive oil
Yes, we sure do need @mariacarmen and @LindaWhit around here!
I’ll offer up my Case of The Very Salty Snack as a cautionary tale. My blood pressure is dandy, but I have learned that I can reliably elevate it with movie theatre popcorn.
Salt bomb! I accidentally found out because we had a rare outing to the movie theater the day before my last doctor visit. Well, the BP numbers that day raised eyebrows. My hypothesis was the salty popcorn that did it. I repeated the experience a few months later (BP monitor at home to check result). Yup, I had my culprit.
Agreed. A small handful of potato chips if I have a burger for dinner, at most. The majority of the salty snacks are now out of the house (i.e., I ate them!
) So that helps. I get these salt cravings about twice a year. Just have to have a couple vs a LOT of TJs organic blue corn tortilla chips with salsa. (Those were my latest crave)
And I LOL’d at “young lady”. Haven’t been one of those for about 50 years. ![]()

Yesterday was a bleak day brightened by pretty snow flurries that didn’t stick around. I put together a few set lists for the impending whirlwind of shows and felt hella accomplished ![]()
Poker was fun. Our host made fabulous food, as ever. We started with spicy pickled cukes,
moved onto shkrompshiss shrimp quesadillas,
fried Chinese chicken,
braised pork belly with bao,
and finally egg-fried rice with shrimp.
We ate too late & too much and went home with full bellies & not entirely cleared out wallets.
The smashburger I was hoping for tonight isn’t happening, as the food truck folks are setting up inside the brewery’s tap room (no open fire, no fryer, just sammiches) bc it’s gonna be colder than a titch’s wheat today, tonight, and into Monday. I may just have a little something at home, followed by another little something at home after the show.
What that may be is TBD. That rhymes, so it’s gonna be delish ![]()
Not to be a killjoy but maybe someone can benefit from my experience. I developed chronic kidney disease due to high blood pressure and possibly the medication I was taking to control it because the medication is bad for your kidneys. I have to monitor everything I eat and drink, specifically potassium, sodium, protein, and fluids. Sodium is in almost everything, even raw eggs and vegetables. Soy sauce and fish sauce? Forget about it. And all condiments that I love. Everyone know salt equals flavor so it’s a battle. I congratulate anyone that can find a healthy balance.
And one other thing. I had normal blood pressure and could have all the salt I wanted until I reached a certain age. I can’t remember what that age was, but I was very surprised when it happened. If you see me posting food that is obviously salty, it’s because I’m human.
Same. Both my mom and I used to have chronically low BP for most of our lives until I think we hit 50.
I’m an unapologetic salt fiend, but I’m also on a very low dose BP med ![]()
Pulled a liter of Kale soup from the freezer, crisped up some chorizo, added cocktail tomatoes, scallions and romaine that needed using up and topped with garlic croutons and Parm/Regg.
Def soup weather round these parts, and this def hit the spot.
I think mine was also weight related. I was able to improve my kidney function through diet and losing weight. Why is that the remedy for everything?
Was going to run out to Home Depot this morning…until I woke up and saw the snow had started Pfffttt. It can wait until I take PTO around the holiday weekend next week.
I decided on tapas-like lunch and dinner today.
Manchego, membrillo, and Marcona almonds with two dots of a slightly aged balsamic; some rolled prosciutto, and green grapes was lunch.
Dinner was Argentinian red shrimp sautéed in white wine, lemon juice, and garlic, and sautéed spinach with raisins, Aleppo pepper, and pine nuts.
There was wine.
And a cozy time with Finny when he decided it was lap time under the blankie after my lunch.
With the weather as cold and blustery as its been, breaking camp has been a painfully slow process. Today was the monthly sh**t and meeting, so my tribe grilled brats over the fire pit. I brought caramelized onions and peppers and a huge tray of brownies.
We sometimes go years without a single frost…we had 4 in a row this year. Tonight’s to be back in the 40s, so I came home for the night. Back tomorrow to waterproof and pack away my lodge.
