Eggplant with Black Bean Sauce from “A Very Chinese Cookbook” - japanese eggplant gets precooked in the microwave before stir-fried with green bell peppers and scallions greens and mixed with a sauce made from slowly simmering sliced garlic, ginger, sichuan chili flakes and star anise and once cooled combining with hoisin, Shaoxing wine and douchi. Finished with scallions whites and cilantro and served over rice
Blackened broiled salmon, homemade Cuban black beans over cauli-brown rice, roasted asparagus, and green salad. Easy and good.
Went with easy sheet pan chicken and veg tonight, tossed in a combo of olive oil, s/p, paprika, granulated garlic and onion powders, Italian seasoning and extra thyme. Roasted at 400° for about 40 minutes until the chicken was at 165° internal temp.
‘twas an overall pretty poopy day, so we cancelled our OG plans to meet up with a buddy & some rando friends of his to catch The Thing at the local theatre, likely followed by drinks.
I just wanted to be home and not have to “people.” ![]()
Comfort food was in order, which usually means a bowl o’ pasta at casa lingua — easy to throw together without having to shop for stuff.
Imported Barilotti I recently scored at Ocean State Job Lots (which has got to be one of the dumbest store names on the planet
), Aldi’s “speshully select” marinara we pimped with local ground lamb from the freezer & 2 Italian snossidges (1 sweet, 1 hot) I didn’t use for the Tuscan soup, half a chopped red onion from the crisper, a lil tomato paste, a coupla crushed garlic cloves, splash o’ Tempranillo, a lonely roasted red pepper from a jar in the fridge, a glug of local heavy cream, and some fresh basil. Parm showered over the top. Couldn’t be arsed to make a salad tonight.
Fun shape, delish sauce. The Tempranillo made for a very nice pairing.
Day’s def less shitty now. I’ll probz still have a stiff drink for dessert ![]()
Hodge Podge from the freezer and pantry. Swedish meatballs with currant jelly and the last few 2025 garden peas. Smushy late season spuds cooked in the air fryer.
A gratuitous shot of our early-spring daffodils.
I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
By William Wordsworth
I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
those are beautiful eggs! so tender…
Leftover miso glazed sockeye salmon salad. It was delicious. I just discovered it was the same one @LindaWhit posted last week, great minds…
Playing catch-up again…
yet ANOTHER cheeboiga by the BF Sunday night, and a giant salad for moi. i told him no more CBs for at least a month.
Then Sat. at my sister’s, we split half a rib eye, and air roasted a big yellow potato, and split that too. Asparagus were given the Japanese gomae treatment (sauce made of toasted and crushed sesame seeds, soy, sugar, mirin, sake) which was a little sweet for me, but otherwise tasty. Steak was fab, if a little more medium than rare.
Went out for dinner last night for an upcoming review last night. And tonight (actually started this on Sunday), winey/garlicky short ribs (NYT recipe), over garlicky parm polenta (Ina Garten recipe) - A REALLY SWELL DINNER. BF went back for heaping seconds and then picked in the kitchen. Short ribs with a little lemon zest were delish and uber tender, polenta flavorful but not overly so. Recipe called for creme fraiche but having none on hand, i subbed Mexican crema, which worked great.
it’s been a beefy few days…
As a native Rhode Islander who loves the Job Lot (no “s”), I must ask why? The company is from RI (“The Ocean State”) and a “job lot” is a retail term for bulk amounts of merchandise, likely unsold at other retailers, that are purchased by a reseller. A practical name if you ask me. They also happen to do a lot of charitable work in RI.
I think there’s a similar company called Big Lots?
I see grass! I remember grass… (oh well the temperature is supposed to go up above 0 later this week. )
DH has had to mow the lawn twice already this year. Last year we had a miserably cold spring, and our veggie garden paid the price. Hoping for a better situation this year…
Thank you for posting a picture of the daffodils.
I was having a rough day, today – feeling defeated – long story. The daffodils reminded me of a happier time, many years ago.
The last oven bread bake until the first Sunday of November. Outdoor pizza begins on the 7th of March . Ordered my 00 flour .

Pasta Salad Caprese - penne, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, salami, basil, fresno chili with a vinaigrette made with olive oil, lemon juice, pasta water and a pinch of sugar. Topped with some toasted pine nuts
Collard greens cooked with smoked turkey. Served with grits and cheese and lots of hot sauce. I started making collard greens a long time ago when I didn’t eat beef or pork. Even though I do eat them now, I still always use turkey.
Your version looks so scrumptious! Though I always prepare my greens minus any meat, I do like smoked turkey. You’ve inspired me to try this.
