What's For Dinner #121 - the Daylight Slips Away Edition - September 2025

I slaved over the toaster oven cooking these Gorton’s fish sticks and defrosting peas.

Tostada Tuesday. Refried beans, lettuce and red cabbage, seasoned ground beef, pico de gallo, avocado, taco sauce, cotija cheese.

Tonight’s dinner was Egg-Bratwurst-Veggie Fried Rice. Yep, I’m using brats in fried rice.

At the end of the day, I’m still glad I purchased all of those bratwursts – something is better than nothing.

Pork chile verde with beans and tortillas. Followed Rick Martinez’s recipe for the chile verde, which came out well:

I had leftover tomato sauce from the meatballs earlier this week, so I added some split cherry tomatoes, simmered with romano beans for a while, then I turned the heat off and added calamari and shrimp. The low temperature left the squid very tender and the shrimp succulent. Over farfale.

Is there a better way to celebrate one’s bday than a doctor’s visit? How about two?

Looks like I might need shoulder surgery after all, but only an MRI will tell for sure. Yay!

Other highlights were many greetings from friends near and far, a bag of peppers of various heat levels a lady in my local cooking group gifted me, and discovering a new bakery in town.

We met up with a bunch of friends including several of my gal pals for a semi-ladies night at the gay bar for drinks before the Sedaris show, which was excellent as usual. Nightcaps were had at the gay bar as well — among them a strawberry negroni (a bit sweet)

and a lovely scotch & Earl Grey cocktail.

Dinner was more of an afterthought, TBH. The gay bar’s menu was Oktoberfest-themed still, and we’d had our fill of brats n tater salad for the year.

I steamed a bunch of mini XLB when we came home.

Not pretty, but pretty tasty — especially at 11:30pm

And what would a bday be without at least a slice of cake, amirite, @truman?

Honey cake from the new bakery. Good, not too sweet.

Thank you, Denise :folded_hands: Seems like the older I get, the more everything falls apart, but that’s a shared experience with the rest of humanity. Beats the alternative (for now)

Sing it, sister! Well, you sing it because you have a beautiful voice. I will lip sync along with you because I really can’t carry a tune.

You are too kind. Maybe I should write a song about ACL tears & menisci & night sweats & hair loss and all that good stuff

That looks incredible! Pickled onions always elevate the dish :face_savoring_food:

More good wishes for your birthday! An aging body is yucky, and so is the never (in our lifetime) ending cavalcade of doctors, tests, scans, etc. I am deep in the midst of health care season. I sympathize.

That looks suspiciously like a single VERY large ice cube taking up valuable real estate in the glass. Sorry to hear about your shoulder tho. But I’m glad the Sedaris show lived up to your expectations for your birthday show!

It was also a whopping $18. Thankfully, a good buddy bought me this as a birthday gift
