Game Day in HV means stay home or make the best of it. I did the latter and chauffeured many an excited fan to the stadium for the better part of the day. Feels good to be working again on a more regular basis.

Friends of ours hosted their annual Oktoberfest today, with brats, several varieties of tater salad — the best of which

(lightly dressed with lots of fresh herbs) disappeared first,

pasta salad

and Festbier on tap, and a big fire in the backyard to hang out at. I had about 4-5 sausages of different kinds with lots of not-sufficiently-hot mustard, and most of the potato salads. The kraut was strangely sweet,

as was a quinoa salad.

Festivities started on the earlier side, so we made it home before 9pm. Looking forward to a quiet (and spicy) dinner at home tomorrow

We enjoyed another outstanding dinner at Drew’s including Autumn bruschetta with roasted delicata squash, herbed goat cheese, dried cranberries, spiced pecans, balsamic glaze; Jambalaya; cornmeal dusted yellowfin tuna in a roast tomato vinaigrette; pork belly burnt ends; fried ravioli stuffed with butternut squash puree, and topped with spiced apple chutney; voodoo shrimp; mussels with applewood bacon, diced apples, shallots, garlic, cider, and dijon cream. We had beignets for dessert. It all went great with a couple of excellent cabernets.

Alaska cod, dusted with seasoned rice four and fried, served over cannellini beans, onion, garlic, red mini bell and roasted cherry tomatoes. Yes there was parsley. Spinach salad, red onion, tomatoes, mushrooms, fried pancetta, Green Goddess dressing. I’m craving brown liquor so there was a pre-dinner Manhattan cocktail and birthday Carrot cake for dessert.

Life has finally swung back to some structure. Preseason hockey has started, so work has settled down. I don’t really know what I’ve had for dinner the last several weeks. It felt nice to cook again. Beer battered some halibut, fried some fries. Corn and zuke. Threw together some tartar sauce. There was definitely some malt vinegar too. Time to get back to cooking, and the two sports that actually matter: baseball and football.

Also, picked up a 10.5kg turkey for Friendsgiving next Saturday. I’m thinking about five days to defrost in the fridge. Does that sound right to any of you experts?

Good looking dish but just to correct - soccer (or the “original” football) is the only sport which matters

I respect that. Just means more football and baseball for me!
