What's For Dinner #120 - the Grilling Edition - July 2025

Tonight I had risotto with asparagus and sun dried tomatoes but using the soaking liquid from rehydrating the tomatoes. The sundried tomatoes I use are the actual dried ones as opposed to the ones packed in oil. The flavour was way too tomatoey for my liking and it took on a scary dark colour. I would probably dilute it with a broth nexrt time. And a picture because I am not embarrassed to show my mistakes:

I second that motion!

NYT’s North African meatballs in sauce. I’ve made this dish before, and find the notes of rosemary, cinnamon, and orange appealing and satisfying. After a very busy day, served casually in a bowl with yogurt. Alongside: homemade soft pitas, and a Greek-ish chopped salad.

Chicken and poblano enchilada from the freezer, green enchilada sauce, pepper jack cheese, lime cilantro crema, cilantro. Black beans doctored with onion, poblano and piquillo peppers, garlic, chile powder, oregano. Avocado and chunky pico de gallo. I should have seeded the serrano pepper as I had to remove it, it exceeded my heat tolerance.

We test-drove a Vespa Primavera at a town about 35 min away yesterday afternoon & liked it. We’ll have to figure out financing, but either way it’ll be far less than a car would be.

It would be great if it were cheaper, bc I also found out at the dentist earlier that morning that a molar for which I just had a root canal (2023) and subsequent crown done will need to be extracted. Talk about a colossal waste of money 2 years ago :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Dinner was at the gay bar — our first visit there since we got back & where we met up with a buddy who’s also a cat person, and who volunteers at the local PAWS. He is one of those amazing, selfless souls who adopt senior cats :orange_heart:

I had a Spicy Quinceañera with St. George’s Green Chile vodka, the smell of which emanated from the flute in a very unpleasant way.

Our favorite bartender poured it into a tumbler over ice, which made it more palatable, but after that we switched to their excellent house margaritas.

The food menu for this week looked really enticing,

but I was mostly there for the Allen Street Roll. It looked skimpy from afar, but it was positively abundant with seafood goodness.

My boo and I shared it & initially thought we might also share the Caesar, but we were full.

Our buddy came over for a nightcap & I was asleep before midnight.

Congratulations on the new Vespa! Hopefully it will serve you well. And I’m sorry to hear about your molar extraction. I hate dentists and I am already on your behalf… I like how your name/your band’s name is spelled out on the scrabble board your drinks are sitting on

Thank you! We’ve not pulled the trigger yet — still figuring out the loan, etc. And of course we need helmets (not legally, but we’re not daft) & a way to get it here. Soon, though, I hope

I used to have severe dentist trauma from a horrendous experience at the tender age of 10, but I’ve long since recovered. I’m mostly traumatized by the price tag

Ha! Right? We rarely sit at that end of the bar, where a bunch of local musicians are ‘honored’ that way

Looks yum! Very similar dinner here last night chicken snap pea onion bamboo stir fry w white rice. Have a snap pea bumper crop and trying to use it up. Kiddo is on dinner today (char sui bahn mi) but day after, I’m back to peas, copycatting a snap pea base pizza with mozz and prosciutto that we had in Vegas years ago. Pea purée is the sauce rather than tomato.

Squash, sage and shiitake soup.

Shrimp and sorrel.

I did not intend to create a meal in which all the ingredients started with an “s,” but here we are.

Another farm class meal—taco Tuesday. Vegetarian (but not vegan) with roasted veggies, cheese, guacamole, and handmade tortillas. I did taco Tuesday for B with sausage/tomato/red onion/black beans/canned jalapeño/shredded cheese. Forgot to take a darned photo! I had the same but with Quorn “chicken.”

I had planned to grill out but such a thick fog rolled in that it was unpleasant to go outside. So I pivoted to stovetop. A lamb burger that I was able to get a nice crust on while keeping nice and pink inside, atop toum with a dollop of zhoug on top. Tomatoes. Tzatziki potato salad from Smitten Kitchen.

Does a mocktail count as what"s for dinner? Because the bartender had my drink made and at my usual spot at the bar when I got here. I need to leave a bigger tip. If not, I had udon noodles with peanut sauce and cukes to finish up the last little bit of pb and half a cucumber. No picture because I’ve taken pictures of it enough times I don’t want everyone to think that’s all I eat  I am now at the jazz club sipping on an Alpenglow (ginger, soda and cranberry). Our celebrity chef was just sitting RIGHT ACROSS FROM ME!!! but he finished his beer then left :frowning:
