What's For Dinner #120 - the Grilling Edition - July 2025

Flew back to BC for a friend’s bday dinner at one of our fave wineries. Had some cheese and wine and a 10mg edible on the plane. Because of that edible I forgot my phone in the car and didn’t get any pics at the restaurant… including a a pic of the menu.

We had an assortment of things. My fave being the tartare and the halibut. Back at the airport now to fly home. Someone is going on a boy’s trip this weekend to watch MY baseball team. I’ll be home with the pets.

Is this a regular thing in airline meals in Canada, or were you in business class?

I didn’t finish the halibut and veggies from yesterday, so I sauteed some cherry tomatoes with shallot and garlic, added the zucchini and haricot pieces, then a couple of shrimps and the halibut. Over farfalle, with myzithra and olives that I added after I took the photo.

Last dinner in Portugal at ZunZum https://www.zunzum.pt/en/ in Lisbon before an early flight back home. The nice ambience of the restaurant was quite different than most other restaurants we have been in Portugal and wouldn’t be out of place in a trendy, new restaurant in San Francisco. Very good dishes with a well thought out menu covering classic preparation like francesinha but also some with an interesting twist like brioche with braised sardines and ankimo.
Overall, a perfect ending to our (culinary) visit to Portugal

Couvert - sourdough bread, chorizo paste, azorean butter

Assorted lettuces, fresh goat cheese, seasonal fruits, peanut sauce

Tuna tartare tartlet, bearnaise sauce, mustard pickles

Brioche, braised sardines, grilled red peppers, monkfish liver

Francesinha - classic portuguese sandwich, sausage, cheese, ham, chorizo, steak

Charcoal grilled octopus, broccoli mash, romesco sauce

Duck magret, oven-baked rice, traditional smoked sausage, grape chutney

Raspberry & pistachio - pistachio mousse, pistachio cruistillant, raspberry mousse

Choux de banoffee - banana mousse, salted caramel

Popcorn tart, popcorn mousse, salted caramel, peanut

Mignardises

Yesterday we smoked a 6# pork shoulder all day low and slow and had it pulled on Dave’s multi-grain buns. Sides of cole slaw and steamed broccoli. Lillie’s Q – our new fave sauce – drizzled after serving. Great smoke ring. A rare treat.:drooling_face:

You can never tell for sure, of course, but he generally seems “comfortable.” He’s just terribly weak as he hasn’t eaten much of anything for almost 2 weeks now — he slurped up more of @BeefeaterRocks’ genius suggestion of chicken broth yesterday afternoon, but it’s just not enough to keep the poor boy going.

Now that his vet appointment is yet again just before a weekend — an ultrasound and a planned sample of his lung tissue/fluid while he is under that would have to be sent out with results coming in 1-3 days, it would possibly mean that we’d not know more about the lung situation until Monday. Since we can’t seem to feed him properly, I cannot imagine taking him home for another 3 days while he gets weaker and weaker.

My thinking yesterday afternoon was that, depending on the ultrasound & how bad things look, that lung sample may not even be necessary and they can just let him go while he is there.

@small_h we are hoping against hope that it’s not as bad, and that any cancer may be treated with steroid shots, on which our prior cat, The Dude did very well for several years.

But the not eating is a very big problem. It’s devastating.
