What's For Dinner #120 - the Grilling Edition - July 2025

Last night I made cod cakes – kind of a hybrid between the NYT recipe @MunchkinRedux recommended (likewise skipping the poaching) and ATK’s shrimp cakes (which puree 1/3 of the seafood into a paste). We both enjoyed these a lot and found them a good vehicle for less-than-stellar frozen cod. Sides of sauteed asparagus, green salad with chickpeas and Italian dressing, and roasted tomato and TJ’s red pepper soup (doctored with sherry, smoked paprika, and black pepper).

Obidos is a beautiful town close to Peniche surrounded by castle walls and with a historic center. The town also has some interesting restaurants and we picked Jamon Jamon https://www.grupojamon.pt/ for our dinner. Good tapas-style dishes but one would expect that at such a restaurant they would be experienced to pace out the dishes. We were a bit surprised when all the dishes were more or less brought to the table at the same time. Good food, disappointing service

Couvert - Variety of breads from Obidos, homemade butter, seasoned olives

“A guilho” shrimps, sauteed in garlic and oil

Smoked ham Iberico, 100% bolota, ciudad rodrigo, salamanca

“Alheira” croquettes from bisaro pork meat

Pork cheeks stewed in red wine

Peixinhos da horta, runner beans fried in tempura

Pork sandwich “bifana”

Quindim

House dessert

I have not. He doesn’t seem to like pureed stuff, but at this point I’m willing to try anything

Put a little on your finger and try to get him to lick it.

Yeah, he doesn’t really do that. He’s more of a formal setting kinda guy

Foraged day lily buds with garlic scapes and sage butter. Lentil soup with sour cream, balcony kale and cilantro. Living off the land! To some extent!

I’ve never had lily buds. How do they taste?

Like a soft string bean. The flowers are also edible, but I didn’t see that many, so I left them alone.

Dinner tonight was a kale salad

Caesar salad with roast pork tenderloin and bits & bobs of stuff I had in the fridge.
Dessert was 1/2 a Cornetto alla Nutella and 1/2 a Almond frangipane cornetto.

Freezer find of étouffée, embellished with shrimp and haddock over rice. Comfort food! It was just rainy and gross today :pensive:

The OG plan was to make piccata with wild-caught cod, sautéed spinach & rice, but I’m too sad to cook. Our boy has gotten so weak that this might be our last night together. We just don’t have much hope for even remotely positive results from tomorrow’s ultrasound, and I already let my band know that I may have to cancel our gig tomorrow afternoon. If our sweetie leaves us there is simply no way I can perform.

Takeout sushi. Again.

I’m so sorry, @linguafood . I hope the news you get tomorrow is more positive than you anticipate. Keeping you and your kitty in my thoughts.

Thank you. It’s been a rough week, and just heartbreaking to see him like that. Hoping for the best, expecting the worst.

I’m so sorry to hear about Chonkster’s declining health :broken_heart: I hope he can hang in there until tomorrow. Sending prayers your way.
