What's for Dinner #119 - the Strawberry Edition! - June 2025

Well, that’s a first. Lol. No problem.

It’s toasty out there but not as oppressive as yesterday. The temperature is supposed to go down to the low 20s by Friday and I hope so since I have an outdoor activity planned. Tonight I had the last two dolmades in the fridge, a chicken asparagus stirfry and the last baklava. I burned the rice tonight since I made a smaller portion and I used too big a pot.

Sunny side up with dippy yolks, taquito solders from the freezer, and my favorite taco sauce. I needed the protein.

It doesn’t happen often that you have a Michelin-level restaurant kitchen as your “personal” chef but it happened to us at Terroir https://www.terroirrestaurante.com/ in Lisbon. Originally they had many reservations but due to the weather and other factors all of them cancelled throughout the day and when we showed up at Terroir it turned out that we were the remaining last reservation. Huge respect and kudos to everybody at Terroir that they gave us the full treatment of the full tasting menu without rushing, perfect service, great wine pairing of only Portuguese wines and wonderful, creative, modern Portuguese cuisine - a truly unforgettable night at Michelin star level

Three times the charm, apparently.

After another incredibly mediocre lunch we had plans to hit up our other favorite Turkish restaurant for dinner that serves an amazing special kebab made with chopped lamb (vs. ground) & pistachios, and that we’d not yet visited this summer.

But our cat sitter messaged us again today that our chonk still didn’t quite seem himself, after telling us about a week ago that he hadn’t been eating as much and seemed subdued. After our buddy stopped in at the time and supplied him with cat grass, which he was all over & which often helps him, we thought things were alright. He may be just having tooth issues (another cleaning and possible extraction was in his near future), but we’re too worried and decided against spending $$$ on a meal we can’t really enjoy

We went to the beer garden near us instead, sharing a decent brat,

then went home. We had leftover pappardelle with chanterelles from a couple of nights ago, and it’s time to start cleaning out our fridge, anyway. I fried up 4 slices of bacon with a few oyster shrooms that also needed to be used up & was going to add those, a splash of wine & a little cream to pimp up the pasta.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t until the bacon was nice and crisp and the shrooms started releasing liquid when I noticed a distinctive whiff of ammonia

And so, into the garbage the perfectly fine bacon and shitty shrooms went. I ended up sautéing a few chopped up tomatoes and half a shallot in butter instead & added the rosé, cream & pasta to that. It was alright :woman_shrugging:t2:

Our friend is taking our boy to the vet around 11pm our time, so we are hopeful to hear back in a bit, and are keeping our fingers crossed for good news.

Mine are crossed right now as well. I hope you hear back soon and it’s something very very minor - or nothing at all! :cat2:

I went on a trip to Chinatown this afternoon and picked up some egg rolls and marinated chicken for dinner while I was running errands. So for dinner tonight I had egg rolls to start then marinated chicken with chow mein noodles.

Temps dipped enough for me to fire up the grill, but it’s still plenty hot, 30 deg C at 5:30pm.
Smashed burger with Jarlsberg cheese, sauteed shrooms, grilled, sweet vedalia onion, mayo, lettuce and tomato. Sliced spicy dills on the side(would have been an even messier experience on the burger) as well as some jalapeno chips. Very tasty burger if I do say so myself.

I marinated shrimp in the green taco sauce I made last week and grilled it stovetop. Sides were leftover quinoa salad and broccoli cheese.

Relatively quick and easy dinner tonight: Skinnytaste Orange Chicken on Basmati rice with sautéed sugar snap peas and red bell pepper alongside.

I don’t change anything with her recipe EXCEPT I add more ginger (fresh grated ginger) and I cut back on the cornstarch to just 1 Tbsp. (Her recipe says 3 Tbsp and that makes the sauce way too thick and gloppy.)

Chives, sesame seeds, and whole cashews (because I can) sprinkled on top.

I hope the chonkster is okay. Sending positive vibes your (and his) way.

Leftover bacon from breakfast usually leads to grilled out cheeseburgers. Avocado. Lay’s potato chips it was good.

A piece of store bought coconut cream pie for dessert.

Coconut cream pie is my favourite :yum:

Last night’s dinner was stale popcorn – courtside – at the WNBA. Needless to say it was a thrill to watch Caitlin Clark lead a trounce over our home team - Indiana deserved the win. The food at the arena, however, was below sub-par.

Back home tonight with old-school tacos and all the usual suspects.
