I recommend Air France! Their business class is fantastic.
Salad, and a little simple broth the BF made me, with oil, cilantro (a la our favorite Portuguese Sopa Alentejana), with a teaspoon of rice, just to warm me up and so that i wouldn’t “just be having salad.” It’s not really chilly (and I’m certain it’s more comfortable here than what the poor people in the Midwest/East Coast are dealing with) but it was nice. Hope all you all affected by the heatwave can stay safe and find coolness!
Saturday night at my sister’s, I made the NYT recipe for oven-baked ribs. I tweaked both the recipe for the rub and the bbq sauce, and both turned out great. We cooked the ribs too long, it turned out, as they completely fell apart, but they were soooooo tasty and tender nonetheless. Sister made a delicious carrot/ginger/sesame dressing for our cabbage, and i had leftover scallion oil on my COTC.
Chicken thigh seared and roasted with bbq sauce. Charred fresh corn, pickled and fresh Fresno chile, green onion, basil. Little gem, tomato, avocado, red onion salad, jalapeno ranch.
is that Surf and Turf and Turf?? Genius!
Also high on the list
that pork looks absolutely luscious! Are you just staying in Lisbon or visiting other cities?
I’ve flown Virgin and I read somewhere that preordering a kosher meal was the way to go. What a horrible mistake. Sister and I bought sandwiches for the return flight. Can’t speak on the other food offerings.
Visiting several places in Portugal
Was this a business class flight ?
I went to the mall yesterday mostly to go clothes shopping and I bought a new tshirt and leggings. I stayed on to do a little shopping at Walmart and the dollar store then off to the grocery store up the street. They have a wide assortment of my favourite chocolates (Rochef chocolates for those of you who live in Ottawa) as well as dolmades and baklava which I had as part of my dinner. So dinner last night was dolmades, rice pilaf and baklava.
Canalha https://www.paradigma.pt/venues/canalha is a relative “newcomer” in Lisbon but gained already quite some attention with a neighborhood restaurant feel and very well executed small plates/tapas-style cuisine. Wonderful relaxed dinner.

We overdid it a bit with my PIC’s killer martinis and the rosé with dinner last night — I in particular was ailing today. Guess we’re just not used to drinking that much in one sitting anymore. Oy
Thankfully the day didn’t feel like a total waste, as it rained for most of the afternoon when we had planned to run some errands. Tomorrow!
Ramen at a place in walking distance seemed like the ticket. We’d originally planned to scoot to another hood for a place with much better ratings, but more rain was forecast so we stuck to this one. We shared very good & clearly homemade gyoza,
and my PIC had some rice concoction with broccoli, ground pork, fried eggplant, and ginger.
My “pork ramen” came with 3 very thick slices of pork, an extremely salty but well-cooked egg, decent noodz, a little bok choy and absolutely uninteresting & unnecessary carrots (I’d have preferred corn).
The menu didn’t offer miso, tonkotsu, shoyu, or other broth choices, which almost made me want to get up and find a different noodle soup purveyor, but we didn’t want to be rude. We probably should’ve taken a closer look at their online menu before settling on this. Oh, well.
Sometimes, a meal is just a meal, and they can’t all be winners (like last night’s, for example)
I foresee an early bedtime at Casa Berolina…
No. I only fly economy.
Voting for Dish and Cuisine of the Quarter is open!
Tacos de pescado a la vinagreta, based on a Rick Bayless recipe from Mexican Everyday. The recipe below is close, but you need to add some habaneros!
Cheddar stuffed and batter fried jalapeños to munch on with drinks.
Grinders on bolillo rolls doused with olive oil/balsamic reduction and a little s@p. Salami, provolone and lettuce. Probably my favorite sandwich. It just tastes so fresh.
Tonight I made peri-peri roasted chicken thighs, crispy cauliflower, sweet potato fries, COTC, and quinoa and chickpea salad with spinach, feta, tomato, and lemon vinaigrette.
Strawberry-rhubarb spoon bread with vanilla ice cream for dessert.
At first glance, I thought your fried jalapenos looked like deep fried mice.
I should have read the description before looking at the picture.
