Maybe an upstate NY variation? I’ve heard “everyone and their aunt/uncle,” generally.
Thank you I was just joking about the famous part
There really isn’t much to the recipe. She pan sears boneless quail breasts in olive oil, salt, and pepper. She chops up and sautés red onions. She roasts mini peppers. She uses arugula as a base for the salad. Then, you can pretty much add anything that’s available. Figs go great with the quail, but we couldn’t find any this week. We like it sweet and savory, so we added blueberries and strawberries. You can add whatever is available during the season. She also drizzles reduced balsamic over the salad (heat balsamic on a low fire until it thickens). Finally she tops it off with fresh shaved parmigiano reggiano cheese.
Way to go! Look at that mop!
! Beautiful season opener!
thanks for the h/t! I’ve now posted my ML review for KKC…
Bummer that yours was neither K nor K - which shop did you get it from?
that avgolemono looks great!
Last night at my sister’s, I marinated a giant pork chop from my farmers’ mkt in red miso, mirin, and sesame oil for a few hours, seared it, then into the oven until it reached 140f. Rested and cut into it, and it wasn’t at all pink! We thought it was overdone but it was actually very tender and super juicy. We split that and each had a little cabbage and scallion salad, mine with roasted sesame dressing, hers with a carrot ginger dressing, both from our trip, and the bonito sesame seeds that went everything were also purchased in Kyoto.
No Chili Festival for us this weekend given the lousy weather. If I’d known it would be that kind of Berlin summer I’d have brought more than one sweater, and far fewer dresses
I’m hopeful (yet pessimistic) that it’ll improve for our visitor coming in next weekend — but at least we can look forward to a few sunny days in Sicily in June
After another lavish Sunday breakfast @Casa Berolina, my dood left & met up with the Welshman to catch an exhibit I wasn’t interested in — and since nothing’s open here on Sundays, I took the opportunity to catch up with some reading.
The men returned to watch a Very Important soccer game late afternoon during which the Welshman fell asleep for 1.5 hours. That delayed our order from the hand-pulled noodle place, as we didn’t want to wake him up
Delivery took damn near an hour, and the noodz weren’t all that hot anymore.
Flavor made up for it, though. My dude and I split the cumin lamb biang biang (only ‘spicy’ this time, not ‘Asian spicy’ like last), and our guest had the same, but mild. Smashed cukes on the side.
The Welshman is off to various cities until he comes back in June for a few more days, and while he’s and absolute pleasure to hang with, it’ll be nice to have a break before our next visitor.
I have an early edition of the Moosewood cookbook but all the dishes are vegetarian. Can you paraphrase the recipe?
Downtown Berkeley, around 3:30PM. Two thunder thighs–I got more than a cup of shredded meat from one of them.
I finally have time to catch up on the posts here. I called an out-of-town friend last night and I think we spent nearly two hours on the phone getting caught up so my Saturday night was accouned for in a good kinda way. After seeing everyone else’s dinners I am clearly going to have to up my Saturday night dinner game I had a bok choy soup with tofu and chow mein noodles.
And a chocolate cake for dessert that tipped over in the container on the way home from the store so it doesn’t look so pretty. It tasted good though!

Off to my local nursery this morning to FINALLY pick up herb and veggie plants, and some flowers for my deck. Had to wait to do so because I needed a nice day on a weekend (which we haven’t had for probably 10 weekends in a row!) to scrub my deck with a vinegar/water solution, because it was all mildewy (it’s mostly in the shade except late afternoon) and it wasn’t scheduled to be powerwashed this year. Finally got sun all day on Saturday, so scrubbed then and bought and repotted today in cooler weather.
I still need Italian flat leaf parsley and Greek oregano, but I got Basil (sweet and Genovese), Chives, Thyme, Rosemary, Sorrel (I was SO excited to see this!), Buttercrunch lettuce, Cubanelle peppers (5 plants) and Rutgers tomato plant (1).
For flowers, I got Blue Easy Wave petunias, Sunset Orange petunias, and Yellow Sun petunias. NOW it’s Spring.
Dinner was broccoli, sausage, and penne in a Parma-Rosa sauce. Garlic bread and wine alongside.
oh yes, i’ve been to that store. and yep, they’re UGE.
The weather and my schedule aligned for pizza Sunday. Truffle goat cheese, leftover ham and asparagus from the garden, followed by tomato and mozzarella
It sounds like you got a nice assortment of herbs and veggies and those petunias are beautiful.

Tonight “light”. Tomorrow, “full liquids, tomorrow night and Tuesday, " clear liquids”, pushing water. Nothing at all after midnightcTuesday, except ‘sip andspit’ water. Big liver surgery Wednesday . I may take pictures of the hospital food trays (actually pretty tasty when you get to have real food!) during my stay. Looking forward to home cooked meals when I can eat, again. Grandpa’s weiner schnitzel with extra lemon butter, wide egg noodles, steamed broccolini and carrots and… a small slice of Pepperidge Farm coconut cake.
Cravings!
Good luck!!!
Here’s wishing you all the best! Take good care.
