What's For Dinner #118 - the Pollen Is Covering Everything! Edition - May 2025

If you reread my post, I never described Alsatian cuisine as “not meat-centered.”

I was talking about my personal desire to have a non-meat centered meal, which I knew I could have at that particular place.

The weather still leaves a LOT to be desired, but the dark clouds parted briefly for us — just in time to meet up with the Welshman & show him our favorite market, where we had a lovely lunch of grilled fish, picked up moar bread & fixins for tonight’s mezzedes meal to snack on while watching the epic schlockfest that is the ESC aka Eurovision Song Contest*: gigantes, dolmades, a scallion spread; Greek feta, fabulous Turkish cukes & date tomatoes for a xoriatiki, and a nice big pide to sop it all up. The Greek feta was unexpectedly creamy and pretty much disintegrated into the salad. Not my favorite.

Besides that, we also had plenty of Taleggio & other cheeses left, plus a slice of a Basque terrine we grabbed at a fancy French place in the market hall near us. Dubai chocolate from the baklava place for dessert. Nobody went to bed hungry

*If you’ve not watched Song of Fire with Will Ferrell, it’s pretty damn close to the actual annual campy-to-the-max event that assembles the most untalented exhibitionists in all of Europe for our listening “pleasure.”

Wow! It’s obvious why this salad is famous! Would Mrs. P. mind sharing her recipe?

Salmon Cantonese-style (recipe from original Moosewood cookbook I have been making and loving for decades), asparagus from local farm stand, jasmine rice. So good!

Went with a Dinner Salad tonight: red leaf lettuce, sliced cukes and watermelon radish, sautéed Argentinian red shrimp, sweet grape tomatoes, shredded carrots, dried cranberries and homemade sourdough garlicky croutons with a combo Penzeys Buttermilk and Creamy Peppercorn Dressing.

There was wine.

We enjoyed another excellent dinner at Bistro D’Azur including black pepper crusted venison with broccoli rabe and crispy roasted potatoes; halibut with ratatouille; crispy duck confit salad with blue cheese, walnuts, and gherkins; lobster crepe (split), and Spanish chips. It all went great with an excellent cabernet and red blend.

A repeat of NYT’s chicken stew, here with the addition of mushrooms and just-picked kale, along with fresh garden herbs - tarragon, oregano, thyme, and parsley.

The Krispy Krunchy chicken I got for lunch had been sitting for a while, so wasn’t krispy or krunchy (thanks to @mariacarmen in her Mission Local article for the twist of phrase). I ate one piece and shredded the other for soup, simmered in freezer stock, with orzo and avgolemono, served with roasted red peppers and a swirl of EVOO. I like how creamy and thick this avgolemono got–it usually doesn’t.

@emglow101 Hey John, any pizza tonight??

Looking forward to seeing your next creation!!

We’re camping at a music festival in KY. Just barely missed the tornados. Great to see one of our favorite artists – and many new to us. The kiddo won a signed Fender acoustic guitar!

We made dinner in the mini crock pot and ate on one of the set breaks – shredded braised beef tacos in ww tortillas w/cheese, Greek yogurt and hot sauce.

And lemon! Lemon makes (almost) everything better

Love it! My PIC uses that expression all the time!

That, and “everyone and their duck”… which I think may not be all that common, given some of the looks he gets when he says it

Its always been “everyone and their dog” in my world … close enough!
