What's For Dinner #116 - the Mardi Gras / St. Patrick's Day Edition - March 2025

Thank you!

We had a fantastic dinner in Lancaster yesterday, where we crashed overnight en route to FL, i.e. our annual spring break pilgrimage. My PIC was there for a work thang last year, when he discovered the town’s surprisingly varied and bustling dining scene, and had also met a couple who was going to join us. They were nice enough to pick us up at the hotel, and we first went to a fairly new, buzzy (= blaring music) Japanese restaurant/bar where we had highballs & did our best to avoid ordering any of the tasty sounding snacks.

We wanted to grab another drink elsewhere & shlepped around most of downtown, but the bars were hopping — perhaps no surprise on a Saturday eve. We decided to head to the restaurant early & lucked out, as our table was ready for us.

The place advertises itself as an Italian eatery & has an extensive Amaro menu. We shared a couple of bottles of very nice Falanghina & a variety of small plates: wood-grilled caraflex heirloom cabbage with pickled Asian pear, gorgonzola fonduta & thyme (fan-flippin-tastic),

little gem lettuces with lemon garlic dressing, focaccia croutons, Grana Padano,

crispy potatoes with garlic & rosemary, Luca profumo, shmaltz, and an incredible aged vinegar aioli,

citrus-cured Arctic char with grapefruit, puntarelle, badger flame beets, radish, caraway & sesame crispbread that was almost too beautiful to eat,

and the pane di recco — a flatbread with taleggio & provola cheeses that could be pimped out with various toppings of choice, i.e. anchovies, or prosciutto… we opted for Calabrian chilies.

We had to nix our plans to split a main (their roast chicken is legendary, apparently) & instead got another small plate we’d wanted to try but probably didn’t need: the slow-cooked and grilled beef tongue with maitake, charred cabbage, toasted farro, and chestnut crema — also very good, but I was sated at this point & couldn’t appreciate it as much.

Our dining companions split the Black cod with sautéed spinach.

No room for actual dessert, so we each got an Amaro (Montenegro for my PIC, Nonino for me).

Sitting at the airport now & hoping our flight won’t be as delayed as announced. Some FAA issues, apparently. Gee. How very strange

It was interesting to see the menu mention that items would be coming out as they are ready.
That clears up a lot of potential misunderstandings!

We missed that announcement & had to scramble a bit to make room for arriving plates, but it was not a major issue

Dinner at my sister’s last night. Black garlic-marinated (store-bought, not by me) wild salmon and with garlic/cilantro/shallot rice. We thought it was going to be a fail (rice seemed mushy, thought I’d overcooked the fish), but it turned out pretty good! Although the marinade didn’t really impart any flavor to the fish at all.

Looks like a really lovely Meal.
I guess my own bias makes me surprised to see this from Lancaster PA. Preconceptions broken

Happy to be of service

Shrimp, crawfish, and sausage étouffée with white rice. Should have a couple of meals of leftovers out of this!

Still frugal at $6.25.

Proscuitto, caramelized onion, and arugula pizza, with a drizzle of olive oil and very very aged balsamic vinegar after it came out.

Sauce was tomato paste, red wine and regular balsamic, because I couldn’t be arsed to think of anything else.

A glass of the Argentinian malbec from last night alongside.

I made cod baked en papillote with leftover green coconut chutney, Singapore noodles with leftover brown rice noodles, and roasted broccolini with orange-carrot-ginger dressing and a drizzle of salsa macha. Sorta random but tasty – especially the fish prep.

NYT’s shrimp scampi and orzo. I’ve made it several times now. It’s delicious and a convenient one-pan meal. My addition includes tossing in frozen baby garden peas at the end. Served with a cucumber salad in vinaigrette.

Last night was grilled teriyaki beef kabobs with stir fried (a little soy sauce and butter) veg (pearl onions, cremini, zuke and grape tomatoes). This satisfied dotter’s no starchy carb requirement and I marinated her 'bobs in light soy sauce, garlic, ginger and a squirt of diet maple syrup instead of our Yoshida’s type sauce. Can’t find Yoshida’s anymore in the stores. Definitely a repeater.

Pork Paprikash. Butter, parsley egg noodles. Red and little gem lettuce, kumato, avocado, red onion, oo&v dressing salad. Wine. I made a few changes in the recipe. I added garlic and smoked paprika, red & yellow peppers instead of green. I thought it was good.

Pan seared lamb shoulder chop with a roasted cauliflower salad from Jerusalem/Recipe Tin Eats,. Lamb was sliced and I took the marrow bone and rib pieces to suck on!

Great with this Rioja

Mrs. P made D’Artagnan duck leg confit salad and tacos. We started off with homemade guacamole (not pictured) and Andouille sausage topped with cranberry blue cheese and caramelized onion jam. We enjoyed an espresso martini with the appetizers and an excellent cabernet with the tacos and salad. I attached a copy of the taco recipe in case anyone is interested.
