I wuz feeling celebratory with my PIC being back from his trip :hugs:, so I made a special smurf & turf meal for us that started off with a shrimp cocktail: roasted black tiger shrimp à la Ina Garten with two dipping sauces… just to change things up a bit.

Besides the usual ketchup / horseradish / tomato paste / lemon / Worcestershire / s&p I also made one with Viet kumquat hot sauce / kewpie / lime juice I thought was absolutely delicious, but my PIC prefers the traditional sauce.

The main event was steak frites: a briefly dry-brined flat iron steak in the air-fryer* (!!!) that came out slightly more medium than MR or even rare, but it was very tender. Knorr’s Béarnaise sauce that was pretty disappointing (like, zero hint of tarragon) compared to their very serviceable Hollandaise, and L&W fries red & white.

A simple salad of butter lettuce with toasted walnuts & flavor bomb tomatoes in a zippy walnut vinaigrette. I’m all out of walnut mustard & need to order more soon!

A lovely Austrian Zweigelt rosé to drink with.

Two choices of cakes (peanut butter & Basque cheesecake) from the Turkish bakery for possibly much later tonight, but right now we’re stuffed :yum:

*I’d heard about cooking steak in the air-fryer before, but was always skeptical. It would’ve sucked major doodah had this nice piece of meat been ruined. I perused a few internet sources that seemed to agree on a preheat at 400˚F for 5 min, then ‘frying’ it for 6 min on each side, then resting for 5 min.

While the steak came out very tender, I prefer a harder sear on the outside, and a rarer inside. Oh, well. Sometimes ya just gotta experiment. It didn’t suck :woman_shrugging:t2:

We enjoyed another outstanding dinner at Fiorentini in Rutherford, NJ, including roasted cauliflower flan with parmigiano fondue and shaved truffles; tuna crudo with clementine, Calabrian honey and sesame crackers; handmade potato and garlic cappellacci with wild boar ragu; celery root steak with eggplant puree, crispy kale, spicy maple syrup jus; duck leg confit risotto with crispy kale and a kale puree. It all went great with a couple of excellent cabernets.

I had leftover mashed potatoes, so I made a potato-based seafood chowder. The mash, stock, clam juice, garlic, thyme, black pepper and a few grains of red pepper flakes, halved cherry tomatoes, a little lemon juice, all simmered briefly. Heat turned off, added shrimp, calamari rings, then cod pieces and the clams from the can. A swirl of Sicilian EVOO.

That bread is attention-grabbing; did you bake it?

(That reminds me, I haven’t been to the “…baking?” Thread in too long.)

Apparently it was the February 28, 1997 menu in Wine Spectator:

I did not, I’m not much of a baker. Bought this from a local baker, Cobs Bread :bread:

Not sure where you live, but I’ve had seeded sourdough from Costeaux Bakery in Sonoma county, California. Really good!

Vegetable biryani with makhani gravy, red onion salad and raita. Lots of prep but oh, so good. Enough for 2 dinners, so worth the time.

That makes me look forward to our likely takeout/delivery food for the game we’re hosting, although I’m sure their makhani doesn’t even come close to yours

Rotisserie chicken(W&D meats) and broccoli, some gravy from the freezer.
Gotta get back on that protein/veg/low carb train again, weather and streets are too messy for my daily walks and I’ve been slacking :sob: :grimacing:

A beautiful lamb steak I got last week at Market Basket, marinated in olive oil, Meyer lemon juice, minced garlic, and s/p for about 2-3 hours, then grilled on a cast iron grill pan for 3.5(ish) minutes each side. Rested for several minutes before slicing.

The lamb steak cost me $12.12, and will give me 3 meals. :+1:

Roasted yellow potatoes tossed with olive oil, s/p, McCormick garlic-herb seasoning, with additional dried cracked rosemary. Steamed green beans alongside.

There was a nice glass of wine.

There’s been a power outage on my block for around 6 hours now.

Take-out Caprese sandwich and a take-out tuna sandwich from Lambo’s Deli in Toronto. I have been meaning to try these subs for a while. I bought 2 sandwiches, and saved the other halves for tomorrow. The fridge is still cold. I only opened the door to put the sandwiches inside and check the temp.

The tuna really hit the spot. It is made with arugula, lemon aioli, and bomba.

Tuna

“Albacore tuna, lemon caper aioli, arugula, radish, pickled red onion, salsa verde, Calabrian chili spread”

“Fresh mozzarella, tomato, balsamic glaze, arugula, breadcrumb gremolata, pesto”

A slice of cold pepperoni pizza from Pasta Forever.
