What's For Dinner #113 - the Holiday Cookie Frenzy Edition - December 2024

As you might imagine, we had a bunch of shopping to do yesterday after several months away, and we managed to get most of it done before the assclowns I mean football fans descend onto our little town for some Real Big Deal match today

Our show last night was sold out  & went fairly well — considering our sax/clarinet had come down with the ‘rona & we had a sax player sub in who wasn’t familiar with any of our tunes :scream_cat: Thank goodness for a good ear & great talent.

Our drummer’s dad was celebrating his birthday, and the kid had asked me if he could give a shoutout to “the person who’s been his best friend for 20 years.” The drummer is 20. That means I’ve been married longer than he’s been alive (it was also our 23rd wedding anni yesterday ). The 70yr old sax player and I had a nice chuckle

I’m just happy things went smoothly, given how long it’d been since our last rehearsal /show, but it’s just like riding a bike  We even sold another CD, bringing the count up to almost 20 this year!

Nothing on the menu appealed to me (besides drinks & despite our 50% off for the band), so my dude made us grilled cheese sammiches when we came home. Hit the spot.

Probz forgoing a Festivus party we’re invited to tonight. We need a booze & socializing break, as there will be plenty of both in the coming days…

I used to have that same problem with my CSA share. With a “regular” share weekly, the proportions were always whacky for how we eat. Now I get a “large” share every other week and it works out so much better.

I made a black bean, sweet potato, and corn cheesy casserole loosely based on this recipe. Served with corn chips, sour cream, salsa, lettuce, jalapeños, and hot sauce. Napa cab (TJ’s) along with.

Take-out pork souvlaki in a pita, stuffed grape leaves, and avgolemeno soup for dinner tonight. I’m making this into an annual thing where I get Greek take-out after doing some Xmas shopping in Toronto’s Greektown.

We were def not up for another party night  After a very slow start we ventured out for a brief shopping trip: three bunches of dill for my xmas eve gravlax I’m starting tomorrow, and my PIC had to get the ingredients for orange cake & coquito. The rest of the day was spent in my brand-new, soft & cozy xmas pajamas. It’s the little things

As for dinner, comfort food was in order: chitarra cacio e pepe with peas and a light green salad with walnut vinaigrette & pepitas.

I toasted the peppercorns in a pan before bashing them up in a mortar & pestle, which really made the pepper shine, and the peas added a nice, fresh crunch & sweetness to an otherwise pretty basic dish.

Oh, and since the outdoor lights on our xmas tree (in my profile header) no longer work :sob:, we finally put up our indoor xmas tree.

Was not in the mood to cook today, but wanted some comfort food. A freezer meal to the rescue: took out a small container of Mom’s Lemon Pot Roast, enough for 2 small meals, and I boiled and buttered some potatoes and carrots.

:sweat_drops::droplet:

And my neighbor shoveled my driveway this morning. I wasn’t planning on going out; was just going to toss out some ice melt. But he took care of the worst of it. A good neighbor.

There are certain things I miss from living in Boston but not that part. How many inches did you have this year so far ?

So wonderful to have a good neighbor to help clear some real snow after at least of year (maybe 2) of almost none?

We got what looks like three inches in East Somerville. I looked out when I woke up this morning and saw our short street sidewalk was clear, to my astonishment. Turns out our young adult son shoveled at 1 am, including our off the street sidewalk and small back porch. Son wants to be the Yeti who appears and helps neighbors anonymously, clears snow and ice as act of kindness.

This was our first real accumulation. Boston itself got 5", as measured at Logan. Further north, we registered about 2". But then it got icy overnight, so a bit crunchy this morning. Down to about 7° tonight.

Thank you! DS would love to meet your cats. We adopted him from foster care when he was 7 and over the many years since then, he still talks about the cats he loved and cared for in his foster home. And my cat friend Annie when I was in grad school more decades ago, whom we have talked about for years and I’ve shown him the photos I have of her. I am really allergic to cats (Annie somehow didn’t have that gene) so we can’t have one at home.

Hope you and your guyz are enjoying cuddling during this extreme cold!

Away for a few days on a mini-vacation in British Columbia. Before we left, I pulled some pork chops out of the freezer to thaw in the fridge.

Tonight, said chops were pan roasted with Penzey’s Galina Street seasoning, and served with roasted garden carrots and spuds, along with leftover creamy pork gravy from last week’s Swedish meatball dish

More delicious than it sounds.

We enjoyed another fabulous dinner at James on Main in Hacketttstown, NJ, including NY strip steak with garlic and herb butter; pan seared Hokkaido scallops with sunchoke puree, winter black truffles, calabrian chili gremolata, sunchoke crisps; maple cured duck confit with apples, miso sweet potato velvet, lacinato kale, brown butter creme fraiche; stone crab claws; crispy Brussels Sprouts with a maple apple cider glaze. It all went great with a couple of excellent red blends.

Pasta Cassarole with Linguica and Kale - there are dishes you make for the first time but it hits a sweet spot and everybody at the table mentions that it is feels like comfort food you have made and eaten many times before. This casserole was one of these dishes. The recipe didn’t look that special but somehow it worked really nice together - penne, blanched and seared kale, seared linguica and mornay sauce with gouda and cheddar and topped with a little bit more gouda and panko crumbs.
