What's For Dinner #113 - the Holiday Cookie Frenzy Edition - December 2024

German cooking magazine who tends to be very creative and uses names just indicating their original starting point when creating a dish (even though the final dish might not have much to do with the original name)

Oh, no, we were cat sitting Rocket and her people returned from their vacation and took her home. :disappointed_relieved: The 15#+ black cat (Owen is his name) is still here, much relieved that he’s not being chased up
and down the stairs. He’s really slowing down now, but still gets the zoomies occasionally.

Went in to work today. Company holiday lunch that I arranged last week from Salvatore’s Riverwalk in Lawrence MA was the main reason. But picking up checks to deposit was another.

I’m tired, but NOT physically. I did REALLY well today. I’m feeling so much better. This will be good feedback for my follow-up appointment on Monday.

Appetizers were a large Shrimp Cocktail platter with a really great horseradishy cocktail sauce (all but 3 were left, but as I was packing everything up, they were snapped up!), and a small platter of Tomato Caprese Arancini with marinara sauce.

We got Caesar salad, Grilled Vegetable Platter, a small tray of Eggplant Parmesan, a large tray of Steak Tips, which came with a large tray of Rice Pilaf, and dessert was a platter each of mini cannoli and chocolate chip cookies/brownies.

I won’t be eating dinner, because I maybe-kinda-sorta-OK-yeah-I-definitely overindulged at lunch. Pretty hard NOT to do so with such great food! :woman_shrugging: If I do get a little hungry later on, I’ll have some Greek yogurt with blueberries and pomegranate arils.

No pictures, because I wanted to make sure I got on the line as the employee-locust horde descended.

Soy sauce and butter pasta with steak, shiitakes, and shrimp, adapted from The Woks of Life:

I found a package of hangar steak in the freezer that was slightly less than half a pound, so it got sliced and velveted and then stir fried before I proceeded with the recipe. I added it in at the end with the shrimp. Deliciously decadent!

It was burger night at one of the pubs in town so all their burgers were $1. I went with one of my meetup groups. Three of us got the blue cheese mushroom burger, one person got the bacon cheese burger and one person got the chicken burger and we all enjoyed our meals. No pictures because we were too busy chatting. I did take a picture of the chai hot chocolate and shortbread I had for dessert when I got home.

Tonight’s dinner was supposed to be last nights but I wasn’t very hungry so I had tomato soup from the freezer and grilled cheese. I have made this before, only change I made was I put the sauce in a squeeze bottle and squiggled it all over everything. Spinach, red onion, radish, mushroom salad with blue cheese dressing. Wine.

Best laid plans n ‘at. Halfway through packing up the car we realized that there was absolutely no way we’d be able to cram ALL our belongings (stuff we brought down combined with stuff accumulated during our almost 4 months in the city, i.e. kitchen equipment, pillows and duvets, suitcases, FOOD, BOOZE, a million bags and boxes, plus somehow that damn cat in his ginormous Fat Cat Carrier) into our car — we would have to leave non-essentials behind, and come back to retrieve them sometime between xmas and NYE.

TBH, I’m already kind of excited to have an excuse to go back & check out ONE MOAR restaurant or two

Of course, this required some rearranging, taking stuff back upstairs, etc. etc., so by the time we left town it was rush hour. Add to that a cat that would not STFU while drooling like a waterfall. He does this when he’s nervous. Unfortunately, the nerves also often affect his insides, and so we had to take an exit and clean up the mess he made — an easy cleanup, at the very least.

I’m so glad we asked our tenant to leave a day earlier than we’d initially arranged, because as surreal as it feels right now imagining myself back on stage tomorrow, I would absolutely not have made it in time for our show bc we got in 1.5 hours later than planned :grimacing:

Since we’d already snarfed up the lemongrass steak banh mi from our lunch on the drive, we ordered a short dozen naked wings & ‘made’ sauce to go with.

It’ll be nice to sleep in our own bed again, in our cozy house. And I’m very happy to be back in my own kitchen

Mexi-bowl ala el BF, with big fat Rancho Gordo Ayocote Negro beans, a big pile of lettuce, carrots, and other veggies underneath guac, Mexi-rice, salsa fresca, and cotija. And a tiny bit of the chorizo he made for his own bowl, with freshly fried tortilla chips.

“STFU” my sentiments exactly at 4:15 this morning.
JHC, there’s no bear out there, nobody is warming up their truck…WTF is it?
It’s getting worse as he gets older—longer and more garbled.
