What's for Dinner #112 - the "Pre-Holiday Crazies" Edition - November 2024

I thought the same thing when I saw @Phoenikia’s post!

The recipe we used was from the Joy of Cooking. Probably not real authentic!

I wish I could ask my mom, but even if she were still alive, she likely wouldn’t be able to remember it :frowning:

I’ve heard that most European countries generally have their larger meal at noon. The only times I’ve done that are on Fridays when I buy lunch since I will have my big meal at noon then a salad or something lighter for my evening meal. Or when I go for brunch I will have something lighter in the evening. I find there is less of a chance I will overeat  But, like you, I prefer my main meal at dinner especially during the week. I find coming home to cook dinner from scratch is therapeutic and helps me decompress after a day at work. Also, I can’t imagine putting that much effort into lunch during the week since I don’t have enough time for meal prep, cooking, plating, etc.

Apart from simply not feeling particularly hungry for the first/better part of the day — e.g. I’m just now finishing my usual “breakfast” of yogurt & fruit. A big lunch is wasted on me, as are most brunches. We have a super-popular Indian lunch buffet back in the boonz, but I am unlikely to ever partake bc I find myself to be rather sluggish after that kind of food, and would be useless / ready to nap for the rest of the day

Also, dinner time just seems more relaxed. Nothing to do after than hang out before hitting the sack.

So where do you live that got so much snow? I live in Canada and we don’t want your snow yet :grinning:

That is the only thing my BIL ever wants for birthday and Christmas: their crab cakes.

The fixins.

Southwestern spaghetti in the IP and garden chard agridulce repurposing last night’s marinated carrot salad. Not haute cuisine but everyone enjoyed.

That totally cracked me up…I took 7 years of French and in my convoluted mind, I read that with the proper pronunciation in the context of Spring Onion. Ahm-burg-gay avec pommes frites et lait au chocolat?

Found some frozen mushroom and sauerkraut pierogi in the chest freezer that needed to be used up, so I made them potsticker style and served them with stir fried carrots, pea pods, mushrooms, and onions, with ginger, light and dark soy sauce, and chile oil.

Repeat. Italian stuffed peppers, salad and cheesy garlic bread. I usually wait until Thanksgiving to get the house ready for Xmas, but in recent weeks everyone seems to be jumping the gun so I decided to join the crowd. Put up the tree/decorated it today. We bought the wrong kind of lights for the front porch so that’s a return. BUT he picked up one of those as seen on TV Points of Life outside flashing lights and it is beautiful. Try it you’ll like it. :slightly_smiling_face:

Semi-productive day: caught up with my bestie in the UK who needed to share some life-changing news before embarking on a 2-week work trip to South Korea (why is seemingly everyone I know heading to Japan or Korea these days?): she broke off her engagement / cold feet / new dude… exciting stuff, for sure :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

Also, the owner of our favorite venue contacted me about shows in 2025, and we locked down 7 dates. I’m pretty happy about that. Then CD Baby sent me a whopping $97 yesterday  — presumably for downloads of our 2018 album, so that’s a nice chunka cash since I’m barely working ATM.

Dinner was at Royal Izakaya, a super-popular sushi place where one can get an omakase meal for $$$$ in the back room (if one can score a rez, which is practically impossible) — OR one can try one’s luck on a Wednesday night and sit at the bar to dine à la carte, which is what we did.

We shared the menchi katsu buns: pork & beef cutlets, lemon aioli, pea shoots.

Loved them, despite not being overly fond of baos. The pea shoots were delicate and flavorful, and the cutlets ultra-crispy. Some really nice bites there

Next was hamachi ponzu with serrano pepper and puffed rice. Nice, and the peppers gave it a bite, but nothing mind-blowing. The puffed rice added nothing.

Finally, we got the chirashi with tamago, maguro, toro, Spanish mackerel, saba, king salmon, ikura, uni, hamachi, madai. Very good, and the perfect amount of food for the two of us.

We each had a pint of kirin on draft, then moved on to cocktails: a Paragons of Normalcy (yamahai sake, blanc vermouth, orange bitters, absinthe) for my PIC, and a Poor Impulse Control pour moi (mezcal, yuzu kosho, shiso liqueur, lime).

Overall a very nice meal for a regular ole Wednesday.

I’ve been reading about your on the KCBS SF website. Be safe and it sounds like you’re prepped. Best of luck!
We’re having just a little snow, here. Time to put the studs on.

I’ve been looking for salt cod to make brandade. I found salt cod (local!), and I made brandade.
