I was too tired to cook tonight so I ordered a pizza. The pie I ordered is topped with artichokes, red peppers, black olives and feta. It was paired with a Partake Blonde.

Lamb bratwurst sausage mix that I shaped onto skewers and grilled. Leftover rice turned into an unscripted version of a tomato cheesy rice I saw, I think, on NYT. Grilled zucchini with a mushroom vinegrette.

Sounds incredible! Love your passion.

Haircut Day.

Trying to get to Wegmans afterwards was…well, trying. The highway was backed up for at least 8 exits from the one I wanted.

So I jumped off early and took back roads. Only to find the back roads into the mall nearby were backed up. C’mon people. You’re starting this craziness already? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Got the requisite sea scallops…three of them coral-colored. Also got two humongous pomegranates the size of softballs. Wasn’t going to do anything with them until tomorrow, but their siren call kept drawing me back into the kitchen. Just one of these suckers gave me 2-3/4 cups of arils!

So I figured I’d use some with tonight’s dinner: pan-seared scallops seasoned with s/p and ground sumac served on leftover Basmati rice from last night’s stir fry, and sautéed spinach. A bit of pomegramate molasses drizzled on the scallops, and pom arils sprinkled on for some color.

Water. :unamused: And pics of the boyz today.

We enjoyed another excellent dinner at Cafe Panache including crispy skinned red snapper over saffron risotto in a lobster sauce; venison loin with an excellent sweet potato au gratin; pumpkin cappellacci; tuna tartare. It all went great with a couple of excellent cabernets.

We went to the Japanese Food Expo at Japan Village, and I got a nice piece of yellowtail (came with free whitebait!), which I had with miso noodle soup. I took a stab at hand-pulled noodles but I had no time to let the dough rest, so they were not very successful. Edible.

Sausage and Lentils with Mustard Sour Creme - First recipe from Ottolenghi’s new book “Comfort”. Sear a few sausages. Sauté some celery, green pepper, onion, swiss chard stalks, garlic, thyme, bay leaf, cumin and tomato paste before cooking it with puy lentils in chicken broth. Once the lentils are cooked, puree a small amount to add some body and briefly warm up swiss chard leaves and sausages. Finish with some parsley and serve with mustard (dijon and whole grain) sour creme and crispy onions.

Look like real comfort food but also not too heavy, the perfect balance.

Any first impressions or thoughts on the book, if you care to share? I have been thinking about getting the book, but wonder how often I’d use the recipes.

After Friday night’s indulgences we hit the gym for a bit, which was surprisingly quiet for a weekend. I may have gone a little overboard kicking boxes, bc my right knee started hurting like a mofo on our way back to the pad, and I still can’t walk very far, even after being good about icing it the rest of the day

That nixed our plans of walking to the newish Italian BYOB we stumbled upon a few weeks ago in Queens Village & that had been getting rave reviews, and we took an Uber instead.

The place was packed to the rafters, but we had a nice 2-top along the wall overlooking the single large room.

I blanked on ordering the appetizer special of stuffed zucchini flowers & am still kicking myself for it today. Instead we got the Caesar alongside the octopus with chalk balls & bacon over radicchio. The octopus was tender, if a bit salty.

As for our mains, my PIC got the pappardelle with ragú and ricotta,

and I the veal Adoro with crab meat, spinach, mashed potatoes, mixed veg and a white wine butter sauce. Oh, there was butter!

The pappardelle were freshly made in house & perfectly cooked, and the meat sauce delectable.

Not sure I made the right choice with my main, although we both loved the mashed. Leftovers came home with us, as well as a slice of ricotta pistachio cake.

A friend from back home was in town visiting his daughter, and he came over for drinks at our pad after dinner.

I can’t even remember when I last posted a meal but I’m trying to be better about cooking and posting. Fish in Chili Lime Sauce from RecipeTin Eats. Chunks of striped bass are dusted with rice flour and lightly sautéed. You make a quick sauce of garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sriracha, red pepper flakes, brown sugar and lime juice. Served with salad of bok choy, grape tomatoes, cucumber, green onion and corn with a fish sauce lime vinaigrette.

This was very good but next time I’ll double the sauce.

Feijoada de Lulas (Portuguese Stew with Sausage, Beans, and Squid). We needed comfort food tonight and easy leftovers for dinner tomorrow. This delivers on both fronts!
