A bowl of the zuppa toscana made over the weekend plus 5 saltines topped with cheddar. Early solo dinner before a rehearsal. I am not totally sure what the rest of the vultures ate….

Turkey bean soup. Bacon crisped, ground turkey browned in the fat, fresh cranberry beans, all simmered in homemade stock, with spinach and grated romano, and a squeeze of lemon.

Another ludicrously HOT day. I can’t recall a Hallowe’en in my lifetime where I was able to wear a summer pencil dress & sandals, yet here we are :scream_cat:

My PIC bought tix for the Flyers game tonight — costumes welcome. Somehow, I’m having a little trouble getting into the holiday spirit. Maybe I should wear a bikini and bring a snorkel & goggles?

The tix entitle us to some sort of “special” food, which is hopefully better than the ‘crab’ fries & chicken tenders the regular places are slinging — at breathtaking prices, of course.

Let’s go Flyers!? :orange_heart:

Re Gan Mian - Hot Dry Noodles With Sesame and Preserved Vegetables, mine included homemade chard stem pickles, adapted from The Woks of Life - https://thewoksoflife.com/hot-dry-noodles-re-gan-mian/

For the chard, I followed Serious Eats recipe for pickled long beans, substituting chard stems. Then let it marinate as a refrigerator pickle for four days instead of canning. Really good!

Cool 65* today. Italian Wedding soup. DH is a member of the soup is not a meal club, so I have to change it up a bit. The usual suspects. Onions, carrots, spinach. 1/2 boxed chicken stock/1/2 homemade from the freezer. A super large meaty parm rind and orecchiette. Toasted Ciabatta on the side.

Ginger-garlic shrimp with coconut milk. Pickled daikon and cucumber salad. Beefeater Rocks. NYT recipe, it was very good, I used a serrano chile which added a little heat.

Too lazy to cook or venture out in the rain to eat out. Decided to combine house specials of two of Richmond Hill’s better Cantonese Restaurants to create a take-out, pseudo-banquet style dinner for the visiting kids.

From ’ So-Good ':

  • Hong Kong Sha-Tin style Roasted Pigeons

  • Stirred fry Tiger Prawns and Diver Scallops with XO sauce

  • Fried rice with chicken nuggets and preserved salted fish

From ’ My Wonderful Kitchen ':

  • Roasted Suckling Piglet paired with marinated Jelly Fish

  • Rose essence Premium Soy Sauce poached Free Range Chicken

  • Baked Pork Short Ribs with Onions in Sweet & Sour Sauce

  • Stir fry Gai-Lan ( Chinese Kale ) with diced sun dried Flounder

pieces and Shitake mushrooms

Based on past experiences, I found take-out food normally does not travel well, with condensation inside containers degrading the quality of the food. Hence, I will be spend time dwelling on reviewing the quality of the aforementioned food…except the Roasted Pigeons!.. which were exemplary! The crispy skin, seasoned well and super juicy birds somehow managed to survive the torture of the 15 minutes car journey and retained most of their quality!!

Decent ‘za.

I had low expectations for both the food and the game. Flyers won

My husband has always been a member of that same club. But, to my amazement, this week we had really good soup from WF for dinner along with a baguette, and he commented on how good it was! He had to do the “cooking” because I messed up my knee, but still…

Pretty sure I have that one saved in my recipe box! I just adore Thai flavors.

You’ll definitely need to double or triple the chiles.

That’s pretty much a given in our household

Stew-oup!
This turned out better than I expected. The meat had a great “crust”, but was still really tender, potatoes and beans were melt-in-yo-mouth and there was tons of luscious juices to mop up with some warm baguette. Good news is, I have one moar meal leftover!!
