What's For Dinner #111 - the "I Got A Rock" Edition - October 2024

I remember those neighborhood potlucks after Isabel knocked out our power for a week in 2003. Everyone brought out their freezer stores and there were some very interesting meals.

Hugs to you and yours. The water situation sounds terrible.

Last night I went to a movie and drinks with one of the meetup groups I’m in. I didn’t have time for dinner at home before the movie so I went to a pili pili joint for a pili pili platter. Included in the meal was a pili pili chicken leg, rice, salad and plantains. The plantains were a little soft for my liking though. I haven’t had plantains enough to know if this is the standard way of cooking them, but I prefer them crispy (like potato chips). I know of only one resto in town that makes crispy plantains  I haven’t been to this joint in a couple of years and the chicken leg is more boney and less meaty than I remember. On a positive note: you can now order medium spiced chicken! They used to only offer mild or hot. Mild was too mild and hot was too hot so the medium spice was just right.

Post movie nojito and strawberry lime cheesecake was a flop. The barkeep put in way too much mint in my nojito to the point it was overwhelming. Likewise with the cheesecake, the lime taste was overwhelming and the strawberry coulis on top looked and tasted like strawberry jam. No pics of dessert since I was too immersed in the animated conversation about the movie.

So glad to hear from you! I thought your camping gear and experience would be helpful, glad to see they were, those are some impressive meals under challenging circumstances. I cannot imagine turning all that out without running water. Best wishes to you and all your extended neighbors that water comes back sooner than expected.

May be you would enjoy some of these as well from a local Joint that has 50 Taps(of which usually 2-6 are actually drinkable):

Glorious Pina Colada
Kettle Sour w/ Coconut & Pineapple

Kiwi Whip
Smoothie Sour w/ Kiwi, Lychee & Vanilla Soft Serve

Cara Cara Bang Bang
Sour w/ Cara Cara Orange, Coconut & Lactose

Hotel Pasteque
Imperial Sour w/ Watermelon, Cherry, & Lime

Can’t say I wouldn’t until I try them

That’s an impressive slate of meals under the circumstances.

Good luck with the recovery from here on, especially as agency focus shifts to Helene.

And Happy birthday!

Great news! No masses, no more look-sees, MRIs, scopes or clear liquid diets for possibly another year!:joy: Bad news, the oncology surgeon is leaving:disappointed_relieved:

Yay!

Engrossed in live coverage of Hurricane Milton (found a local weather livecast from WFLA Ch. 8). BF’s parents have safely evacuated and are traveling (with their doggo, Sammy) to friends in Myrtle Beach. They’ve made it to Georgia at this point. Dinner is delivery from a local Chinese American place and adult beverages. Florida peeps, I hope you’re staying safe!

Your BF (and his parents, and you) must be so relieved!

I keep checking in with a friend and former CH (linny) to see if she’s ok. It’s worrisome, for sure!

Yes! We’re very relieved! I hope linny is ok, too!

It’s been pouring for hours, and they just had a tornado warning :scream:, but she’s hoping it’ll be downgraded to a TS since it’s going right over them. Yikes.

BF’s parents were in Venice, FL before they evacuated. The livecast we’re listening to just said Venice just lost power. I hope it loses more energy before landfall, but this is really, really bad.

The video of the tornado activity over in Royal Palm Beach (other side of the state) is pretty scary, too.

Yeah, she’s south of Cape Canaveral. No rocket launches today, I’m guessing :grimacing:

Found a small piece of mahi mahi and some wings, sauteed some romaine with diced tomatoes, red onion and blanched broccoli in roasted garlic oil.
Twas pretty good, but not my best effort.
You work with what you have :man_shrugging:t2::rofl:
Desert was a couple of Krispy Kreme’s warmed up in the oven whilst it was cooling down, damn those things are addictive.

That’s intense! Neighbors of ours didn’t have gas and were using the Green Egg for everything. Eventually another neighbor lent them a camp stove and propane.

Wow, that’s so much. I wanted to leave after panicking when water stopped on Day 2. Fortunately or unfortunately the roads out of our county were blocked in pretty much every direction. In the meantime before they were cleared we plugged ourselves into recovery efforts and joining the missing-person search, and developed new coping strategies. I’m glad we stayed. Our cat was a factor, as is having a 7-year old. Hotels are hard and boring with little ones. We were actually going to take our pop-up camper to the nearest site with water, electric, and cell/data coverage but for now, at least, are planning to stay. Hoping our school district makes progress with drilling wells at each campus so school can resume (they have to have sprinklers per regulations). It’s a big ol’ mess.

If we were still powering up with our car the calculations might be different, especially as cooler weather moves in. Laundry is onerous, too. On the other hand, our community has rallies even more than during COVID.

It is amazing how community spirit gives its participants strength. Thank you for sharing that with us!
