What's For Dinner #111 - the "I Got A Rock" Edition - October 2024

Poor Charlie Brown. While every other kid in the Peanuts Gang was getting lots of candy thrown into their bags during the perennial favorite, “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!”, all Charlie B. got was some rocks. Linus sits in the pumpkin patch, waiting for the Great Pumpkin to show up, and even Snoopy got into the Halloween spirit by climbing aboard his Sopwith Camel doghouse as a WW1 fighter pilot to engage the Red Baron in a dogfight, crawling through the French countryside behind enemy lines! :joy:

But Halloween is just one thing going on in October.

Think about taking your family to a local farm for exploring corn mazes, PYO apples and pumpkins, cider donuts, hay rides. And don’t forget the spooky haunted houses at night, too! (real or otherwise!)

LEAF PEEPING begins in earnest in early October.

National Black Cat Day is October 27th - and my local MSPCA is waiving adoption fees on black cat adoptions from Oct 1-4. Black cats need love, too!

It’s National Chili Month - can’t think of a more perfect month to have a big pot of chili cooking on the stove.

Yeah, October is definitely the month for cozy, warm meals - at least for those of us in sweater weather states! What are you planning on putting on the table?

70° here in the NW Rockies, after a freeze over the past 2 nights.
Perfect burger weather; going to try the home ground burgers I saw on ATK the other day. I picked up some nice, soft sesame topped brioche buns for the burgs.
I’m going to finish the last of the hand watering and then pull the hoses to drain and take out the garden water manifolds. Then I open the vegetable garden gate for the deer to feast on ‘leftovers’.

Technically, FIFT.

Yesterday, it was 109 and today its only going to be 108.

I’m hopeful the temperature will drop in the next week or so, I’ve got a lot of outdoor Fall projects I’d like to do.

Temps in Philly are also still more ‘late summer’ than ‘hey, it’s fall!’

I can groove to that.

Qeema shepherd’s pie with a huge hat tip to @jammy and @Saregama. I have been making qeema for years based on a recipe from a 1986 cookbook by Ismail Merchant, it’s one of my favorite comfort foods. But it had never occurred to me to make it into shepherd’s pie which I also love. Genius!!

That’s what I thought when I saw the recipe in The Pie Room. Yours looks delicious!

Easy-peasy / cheapo-peepo was on the menu after last night’s mediocre meal & colossal waste o’cash.

Sprouts’ Cajun butter marinated wings from the air fryer, celery & blue cheese dip.

Did not suck, and at $4.99 / lb. a pretty, prettty, prettttty good deal

Assorted hot sauces and Schlenkerla’s Schwarzbier to go with.

Looks great! It’s what I grew up eating, and I’m glad you liked it!
Next up – kheema macaroni

I have this one from Ismail Merchant, lovely read but I haven’t cooked anything from it (yet).

Checking in from the maritime PNW where the weather is a balmy 56 deg. F. Same as it has been All.Summer.Long.

There has been one rogue ribeye in our freezer since last fall, and tonight it met its demise. Grilled ribeye on the BGE (legally!) – lean part for me, everything else for DH. Roasted carrots and potatoes from the garden. Freshly made chimichurri sauce over everything.
