What's for Dinner #100 - The WFD Big 100th Edition - November 2023

We had a vegetarian chilli using soy mince. It’s surprisingly good so I’ll be buying up bags of it when it’s on sale. It takes a bit more spice than meat for us but with the right tweaks it’s just as enjoyable. It’s also a lot more filling for me so I get plenty of leftovers.

That’s a gorgeous plate of pasta.

Can I just say that I LOVE an entire restaurant devoted to meatballs!

We have one of those, too!

But that’s in NYC…and I’m not!

I also like the idea of having other meats, such as moose, deer, veal, bear, but I know moose and bear aren’t readily available in NYC.

Stopped by a good fish market yesterday and picked up a couple types of grouper. One was a snowy grouper. Pure white soft flesh. Not cheap but delicious. Still cheaper than eating out.

That’s what I always say when I feel I have to justify a splurge (like lobster, or crab, or scallops, or fancy fish): it’s always much, much cheaper than ordering the same in a restaurant

Met up with my gal pals (finally!) after a 3-week hiatus. The menu at the gay bar was the same as last week, and I didn’t feel like having either the shroom pasta or the (fab) autumn salad again, so I had the ‘smoked salmon gyro with tahini dressing, tomatoes & cukes,’ which was served on a boring pita & was overall pretty mediocre - thus no photographic evidence. Shoulda had the salad again instead, or the ginormous crab cake BLT one of the ladies ordered

We’re invited to a friend’s house for some special pizza he imported from a place in DC, where he spends half his time. So, no cooking at casa lingua esta noche. Me gusta.

Lesson learned? That’s what I try and convince myself when straying from a favourite menu item.

Well, their menu changes weekly (obvy not this week hahaha), so you can’t get too attached to any particular item

That sounds so frustrating! There is a pizza place up the street from my place that has a Mediterranean pizza on the menu which is my absolute favourite (artchokes, mushrooms, black olives, feta) but I strayed one time and ordered a veal parmigiana. The veal was nicely cooked but was covered in a really thick coating of bread and served with enough pasta to feed a family. The tomato sauce that coated the pasta had absolutely no flavour to it either. Next time I will just stick to pizza :grinning:

I don’t mind it at all, actually, as I like variety. The plates come from the same kitchen as my favorite restaurant in town, and sometimes repeat. Since our ladies night is a weekly thing, I get to try different things each time… well, save for this week

Here are the current menus:

The chef is a trained patissier from Philly, and her desserts are supposed to be amazing. Sadly, I’ve never had room for any of her creations.

That menu looks amazing! It’s too bad the smoked salmon dish was a flop. The ice cream sundae looks good.

I saw the sundae last week - the guys next to us were sharing it. It looked incredible :heart_eyes_cat:

that is a gorgeous pasta dish!

Pot roast over egg noodles tonight. I started it last night but it needed some more time to cook and get tender so it is back on the stove. This recipe is the best one I’ve found. I use a lot more red wine than is called for though. haha

Yeah, we made a $95 cioppino for 3 on Thanksgiving with ample leftovers. No markup on alcohol and no tip. Always a better deal.
