leftovers here. the BF made eggplant parmigiana and topped it with the leftover Little City meatballs and sauce. also, he gave in and ate his peruvian Aji de Gallina, which he now admitted tasted great. he added some sauteed cauli, and having sat in the fridge for a few days, the whole thing was very flavorful. i kept going back from one sauce - the Italian - and the other - Peruvian - trying to decide which i loved more.
Today I have dabs from the F/V Sabrina Marie in my fish share. This is thrilling because I love dabs and fish is allowed on this yucky low residue regime. Very limited in how I prep it so going with the tried and true crumbs-lemon juice (strained)-butter and bake treatment. Alongside will have green beans simmered into limp submission in some chicken broth and a bit of tomato paste, then anointed with some EVOO and lemon juice (did that a few nights ago and it was surprisingly tasty) and maybe a bit of mashed potato.
@Gio, curious if you are getting the salmon next week? I am (have had it before and it is amazing!) but you are more principled than I and not sure it is up to your admirable standards.
@Gretchen, LOL. I’m not going to order the salmon. We prefer Pacific wild caught. The advert for the salmon is indeed enticing, but there are issues with all kinds of farmed seafood. I will say, though, I have tasted some wonderful farmed salmon in the past. Yesterday we received the special ordered mussels, and the regular share of haddock from the F/V Capt. Joe which we’ll have tomorrow.
This was the second time we bought FC’s mussels and we were disappointed in them. The first time we had the mussels they were huge. The biggest I’ve ever seen and the meat was ultra sweet. Yesterday they were very small, as big as my little finger, and the meat, what there was of it, would have fit into a thimble. We cooked them as planned, all opened, and they were tasty - probably because of the Dijonaisse sauce. But I’ll not do that again.
There are about half left with which I was going to make a chowder today, but I think I’ll just toss them in the bin. With the mussels we got 2 cups of the Fishwives’ fish stock which we froze.
Bummer the mussels were disappointing Gio. My share partner is getting them today – I will hope her experience is better. I am very pleased that they are branching out and offering other things and hope they continue down that path.
Dinner out last night. We shared the special app of the night - a chicken liver mouse, toast, pickled red onions and cornichons. Yum. I love the smell of crusty bread that comes out really nice and toasted. For dinner DH got the burger/fries, and I ordered the cauliflower. The burger was really good – just a nice beefy patty without a lot of distractions, lettuce, tomato, and a dollop of sauce. We are auditioning a new local restaurant/bar to see about finding our replacement hangout. Three visits and we both give it thumbs up. To be fair, I probably need to order something besides the roasted cauliflower next time, but it’s just so good.
Middle Eastern bowl of vegan goodness. Zucchini ribbons, chickpeas, sumac-roasted carrots & shrooms, caramelized fennel & onion, roasted pepper, currants, radicchio, pistachios, and a charred orange & tahini sauce with aleppo & garlic. The sauce was dangerously good (as in, if there was extra I would have poured it straight down my throat).
Drank some Bourbon.
Cooked a pot of rice.
Made a killer Creole Sauce.
Fried A few catfish Filets.
Laid a piece of fish on a bed of rice.
Spooned the Creole sauce over it all.
Delicious.
We are having stunning Indian summer weather on the SOC. Went to the FM today. Got some last of the season cotc, excellent spinach and red buttehead lettuce, a large tomato for my cheese burger (the critters have destroyed my garden), and since it is fall, yams and brussels sprouts. So dinner tonight was, beork cheese burger, orzo salad and a glass of Hefe.
OK this photo is for @CindyJ. Not very good-looking but very tasty given my constraints. Ended up sautéing the dab filet in brown butter – fish that fresh really doesn’t need anything else and it was delicious but fell apart when I was plating. The green beans were long-simmered in chicken broth and fish sauce, then drizzled with lemon juice which gave them a really good flavor. Mashed potatoes from freshly-dug farm potatoes that I pick up where I get my fish share. So tasty it will be lather rinse repeat tonight! I only wish capers were permitted, lord knows why they are not. @Gio, my share partner said the mussels were small and a pain to clean but “absolutely delicious”.
