How do you tell the difference?
The taste is a bit different, like other regional overlaps with ingredient swaps. And who’s selling them ![]()
Achappam are usually made with coconut milk.
Hmmm. These tasted different to Bengali style sweets. They were from a shop that sells deep fried snacks. I’ll post something in the Kolkata thread.

You should open up a patisserie! You’d make a killing.

Chocolate cake, chocolate frosting, some vanilla ice cream or crème fraîche might be nice with this.
A fine, delicate crumb, this cake has both chocolate and cocoa , making for a very chocolatey experience. A Helen Goh cake, originally called Matilda Cake from her café in Australia.
Rhubarb creme brulee - don’t believe the recipes, this requires very few processes and little effort, far from what the chefs would have you believe!
Just mix the egg yolks (4), double cream (300ml), and full cream milk (75ml) - and very gently warm while continually stirring in a saucepan just until the custard starts to leave trails on the edge of the pan, then take off the heat and continue to stir as the mixture cools.
My (Goan) mother used to make them at Christmas. Can’t remember the Konkani name for them.
Kokkisam?
No, doesn’t ring a bell.
I was curious about the name, so I went to the website “Hilda’s Touch of Spice”, and found that they are called Kokkisan in Mangalore, and ‘Roce (or Rose) cookies’ in Goa, which makes sense as they contain coconut juice (ros).
Our favorite Turkish baker & cookie delivery gifted us this special Ramadan treat with our recent order: a Dubai chocolate date.
It was delicious, and not too sweet, which is usually my beef with dates.
I can send you some snow if you like ![]()
We just re-upped our cookie supplies. The Turkish baker is cutting down to weekends only, but she made an exception for us. I think it will make her stuff even more special, and we should probably not be ordering cookies outside of the weekends, anyway ![]()
Ha, no thanks. As a NorCal native, I don’t miss the snow (or summer heat and humidity) of my east coast sojourn.
