Not a fan of Fleischsalat. And shrimp, like most seafood (unless we’re talking brown shrimp / Granat) is forbiddingly expensive in Germany, as I’m sure you’re aware.
I like the seeded rolls for breakfast in Germany.
I had perfected my ideal German hotel buffet breakfast on my last two trips in 2015 and 2018.
I might try making them at home. I can’t find them in Canada.
Good Krabbensalat is worth the price for a great breakfast (and compared to the US the seafood priced in Germany look reasonably)
Really? I find scallops, shrimp, lobster, and many fish far more affordable where I live in the US than in Berlin.
I eat TPSTOShrimp back home in almost as many variations as Bubba can name, so it’s not something I seek out here.
Except for trout caviar, which is much easier to find here, and more affordable. Go figger.
Now I am curious how much do you pay in your area on the east coast for (fresh not frozen) scallops, shrimps, cod, monkfish
Scallops cost around $30 -$50 USD/ lb in Toronto, depending on their source and size.
I don’t find cod or shrimp too expensive.
Halibut is around $30 USD/ lb.
I paid $20 USD/lb for Mediterranean sea bass this week.
I rarely buy fresh shrimp, as I can get very good quality frozen black tiger shrimp at around $11/lb.
I haven’t memorized all the prices for seafood or fish at our local fishmonger, but off the top of my head I’d say around $22 for cod, probz more in the higher 20s / low 30s for monkfish.
I only get fresh scallops on sale.
These prices look reasonable similar to what we pay in SF but are more expensive what we pay in Hamburg for most fish, scallop etc. We got cod or similar fish often around 22-25 Euro/kg
Well, SF is one of the most expensive markets for… pretty much anything, so I’m not surprised prices in HH would seem more affordable.
Scallops are crazy $$$$ in Berlin, as are oysters. I get my seafood fill the remaining 10 months of the year and don’t really miss it here
I buy my scallops at Wegmans in Burlington, MA - just got them on Saturday. Large dry scallops, 15-25 count) are now $29.99/lb. I got 5 of them that ended up being .36 lb, and cost me $11.10. They haven’t had the jumbo scallop in awhile.
Their fresh wild shrimp is $17.99/lb., can’t recall what the frozen shrimp costs. Cod loins are $9.50/lb. each, and Atlantic cod filets are $23.98/lb., as are haddock filets, whereas Pacific store-cut cod is $12.38/lb., and Chilean sea bass is $24.05 each ($36.99/lb).
But from the prices you wrote for your east coast place, it looks like it is also much more expensive than Hamburg (and Hamburg tends to be more expensive than Berlin)
Having never bought seafood in HH for as long as I have been alive, I’ll take your word for it.
It’s another beautiful day out! I’m hoping to squeeze in a walk later. This morning’s breakfast is a bowl of muesli.

Another proper German brekkie with the usual suspects
We were out of eggs, and my PIC went to the supermarket in the rain.

Thai red curry noodle soup with flounder, greens, and herbs
I had flounder, bok choy, and leeks in the fridge I’d intended on being dinner on Thursday, but we ended up doing crackers and charcuterie instead. So, I used a couple tablespoons of Mae Ploy red curry paste to kick things off and worked from there. I even remembered to use some of the lime leaves in my freezer!
Another lavish breakfast @Casa Berolina: SBEs, The Perfect Bread & cheeses…
but the most important players today were two favorite products from my childhood, for which I finally found an organic version (“organic” actually means something around these parts, including humane husbandry) — after having had all but given up on ever eating my beloved pistachio mortadella or Teewurst again.
