That’s what I would have started with.

Can find them here no problem, finding good ones is a different story

She eventually shared a morsel with the rest of us, after a lot of guilt tripping

Crispy tot waffle, eggs over, very smoky delicious bacon, avocado. A liberal application of green Cholula took it over the top.

Yes - the good ones actually have apples in them…

And crunchy crispy edges :yum:

Good ones are hard to find aywhere! I have not had a ‘good one’ in 35 years. That one had a good measure of chunks of soft apple in it.

It’s not too hard to find apple fritters here in Las Vegas, but they’re all humongous…except for one supermarket, WinCo. They’re about the size of a small hand, only $0.76 and not sickeningly sweet.

OTOH, getting my favorite donut, an unglazed buttermilk bar is impossible! Apparently they’re a Southern California thing. I have seen glazed ones here but they much too sweet for me.

Pictured is what one should look like.

Thanks for the intro to a new-to-me breakfast pastry - unglazed buttermilk bar is not something I’ve seen. Now I need to check out bakeries here in MN – we “import” all kinds of California ideas here. Maybe some good food, too.

You’re welcome! I hope you can find one…the nooks, crannies and edges are really good!

Wow. Never seen or heard of them!

They really are perfect, esp. with a cup of strong black coffee.

Found this recipe for buttermilk bar donuts, with hints for success. I’m intrigued, although I rarely (like only every 5 years…) deep fry anything. https://www.norinesnest.com/buttermilk-bar-doughnut-recipe/

That recipe is where I “borrowed” the photo I posted!

Because they’re so thick, I don’t think they’re going to be easy to fry and get the center done.

When I lived in Japan, I was enthralled with “sata andagi”, which are Okinawan donuts. They are quite similar in texture to buttermilk bars, but different in taste (maybe tastier?). They might be easier to attempt to make. Here’s a recipe:

But was it a breakfast SANDWICH?

Shamelessly copying @small_h with egg and asparagus. My addition was some herbed ricotta on toast.

Touché. Today it was!
