A dollar or two? Here in SoCal their 8-pc whole chicken is $18.99. I totally agree the chicken is far better, but the Costco price is hard to beat.
The place to look for El Pollo like chicken for less are the Mexican supermarkets. Many have grills outside making spatchcocked chickens over mesquite…usually for $10-ish, same idea, lost leader. I think the 8 piece family dinner at EP is now $25, and the secret ingredient at EP is MSG. There use to be a market (El Ranchito) in Oakland that sold one….then it was taken over by Cardenas. It was way better than EP.
re: Costco rotisserie chicken, I’ll eat a leg quarter as a dinner but the rest gets shredded, right away, while still in the bag for less of a mess. Just stick in the frig after that.
Thank you. Our son lives near the Mercado Gonzales in Costa Mesa. We’ll have to see if they have something like that next time the timing works out.
I grew up in that town. Mercado Gonzales Northgate doesn’t have the outdoor grill but they have an indoor flame grill and sell a whole chicken combo with rice, beans salsa and tortillas for $20. I don’t know how much just a chicken costs. In any case, that place finally calmed down. For the first 6-8 months it was a complete zoo. They even put up restrictive parking.
Got it. Glad to hear it’s calmed down. That was one of the reasons we hadn’t been there. Always seemed crazy when we went to another place in that center.
I now return you to the regularly scheduled program.
