What kitchen tool did you hate, but now like?

what kitchen tool have you owned for a long time, but disliked and never used, but now use all the time?

Here’s mine…i had no idea that I need it so much - it helps unstick the pizza from the pizza rack, I use to crack the eggs before I put them in the pan, slide under stuff to loosen…

In my younger years, I once was gifted a fish spatula, but I didn’t know that’s what the name was. Tried it with eggs, and some other things and hated it. Didn’t realize until i was 20, that it was a FISH spatula, and, after using an inferior spatula for fish for 6 or 7 years, realized dat sht worked great… for fish. Dmbarse.

My Pops gifted me a “Magic Bullet” with quite a few attachments, many years ago and I thought I’d never use it as I already had a blender. Said blender conked out on me eventually so I started using the Bullet and haven’t looked back since.

I recently got a plastic (?) fish spatula to use on the better skillets so I dont’ have to throw out the teflon ones after getting scratched up by metal spatulas a couple of years. I don’t know how I ever did without it. So thin and wonderful for flipping delicate things!

I totally get that, For me it was a silicone spatula. I never thought I’d use it much, but now I can’t cook without it. So handy for scraping and flipping.

someone bought me a 4 piece set of these silicone scrappers a while ago, and stuck them in a drawer and never used them. . But I started using the concave shaped one (called a “spoonula”). I don’t use the other pieces but this one in the picture I use all the time

I have a long, flat ended spatula. It was probably intended for icing. I rarely ice, but it is GREAT for scraping chunks of dried dog food and drool off the kitchen floor that the mop just can’t get.

I didn’t “hate” but was “meh” for a while about some old-school grinding stuff: a mortar and pestle, and a hundred-plus-year-old burr spice mill with a hand crank atop.

For the mortar and pestle, I love the 17lb large (9"?) granite one I got from a Thai/Viet grocer. I use that for more than I can say–spice rubs, mashing garlic, smashing basil or other leaves for pesto, making “REALLY” rough-cracked peppercorns… You name it.

The spice mill is antique but timeless and functional still. Wooden box with a crank on top, a hopper below, and some cast iron burrs in between. I normally keep whole white peppercorns it to grind as needed, but I’ve also made complex garam masalas–this thing can fresh-grind dried bay leaves and anything else you throw its way. Looks like this:

wow, that’s awesome - thanks for posting a picture - I think I’ve seen one before but had no idea that it is so versatile…

I have a coffee grinder. I have used it for course ground beans. I’m glad you posted that photo. I got mine down and cleaned it up and found two blades for my utility knife in the drawer.
