What have you been watching lately?

The tv network, home of endless hot young people dramas of various genres including the ‘Arrowverse’, a series of DC comics based superhero shows that are frankly better than any of the major DC movies they’ve put out in the last 10 years.

Agree on Jodie Foster. And then The Marvelous Mrs Maisel will also be off limits, a show which I unexpectedly enjoyed a great deal, thanks to the excellent script writers.

As always at the end of the year, The Guardian is giving their best of the year rankings (tv shows, movies, albums). To keep you coming back to the website they do numbers 1-10 on subsequent days.

Of this list - of which I haven’t yet seen a lot admittedly - I really enjoyed The Worst Person in the World.

Was underwhelmed by the second White Lotus season. Meh.

I can’t even remember the last time I watched anything. I’m busy with the National Tourist Guide Lecturer license course. But I’m warning ya, get ready to hear a lot about movies when I finish the course in February. I’m going to watch at least 100 movies (of course exaggeration but the actual number will be very close)

Good seeing Tender Mercies way up there, though we think that without Tess Harper, the notices don’t flood in.

Haven’t actually seen that one… Must watch soon! Notable omission in the list is imho of course Falling Down, though even Duvall cannot equal Michael Douglas’ screen presence, the guy is amazing.

Just bought my advance tickets to see the new Avatar on Monday afternoon. (hooray for burning your last sick day of the year by playing hooky!)

Yes, the first film had a story that could accurately be decribed as a mash of Ferngully and Dances with Wolves, and yes, Sam Worthington has what I can only describe as anti-charisma. (He is not bad. He doesn’t inspire loathing. He is blank. White noise. No ‘there’ there.) Cameron is one of a very few if not the only director that seems to to know what the hell to do with 3D.

I disliked the 3D trend intensely, and I have my NAME on the first Avatar. 99.99% of the time, 3D is an afterthought, thrown in because bean counters have a spreadsheet that shows ‘more beans’. It’s often poorly done and gives me a headache. But Avatar was like watching another world, and Cameron and his DP and the guys in charge at Weta went FULL TILT into the how and why of 3D and didn’t take any of the shortcuts. It was stunning. The clanky story was a slog, but the canyon flight sequence bought a whole lot of forgiveness.

And now, he wants to spend 3+ hours in that same universe’s OCEANS? Sure. Here’s $20. I’m in.

I will be totally satisfied if I get the most awesome 3D nature film. If there happens to be a good story stuffed in there somewhere, lucky me.

I know a lot of folks are not really on for visiting theaters, still. But if ever there was a film you WANT to see on the biggest damned screen you can find, with 3D and High Frame Rate, it’s this one.

It blue

(Well my pithy review of first and probably the second)

You must. He manages a convincing enough two step on the dance floor . . . can’t remember if it was to the classic Johnny Cymbal composition “I’m Drinking Canada Dry”.

We think (we think) we recall reading long ago that on learning that Tess Harper is nearsighted, the director wanted a lot of her scenes filmed without her wearing usual contacts ? . . . maybe accounting for her memorable performance . . .

I concur, and I may just be swayed to watch the second one for all the reasons you mention. I’m just debating which psychedelic treat to ingest beforehand

California means I have THC tablets available. My showing is at two. Take tablets at about noon. Lunch at 1. By the time the trailers are done, everything should be ticking along nicely.

Can’t do edibles, but I have some other options…

Alas, The Onion (along with its once excellent offshoot, The AV Club) is now owned by some vulture capitalist group that has hollowed out its staff. The Onion itself has been off the reading list for ages. The AV Club recently offered its most experienced writers a demand to ‘move to LA and work in office or quit’ to mostly Chicago-based writers who worked from home. And there would be no relocation/cost of living adjustments. They also managed to grind down The Takeout (once a pretty decent food-focused vertical) along w/ Jezebel, Gizmodo, The Root, etc. It’s sad, really. The implosion of Deadspin is legendary but led to the creation of The Defector. Jalopnik lost a good portion of its staff to the new TheAutopian.com

What’s left is just coasting on a community that hasn’t purged the sites from their muscle memory of ‘shit to distract me when I don’t feel like working.’

ETA- having read the article, I will admit, this line is funny:

Q: What are the viewing options?
A: Standard 2D, 3D, and 2D with edibles.

and apropos.

I really liked “Let the Right One in.” I’d seen the OG movie years ago, and I thought they did a good job with it.

Favourite Christmas movie?

I really liked Klaus (2019). And also Scrooged with Bill Murray. And then apparently there is a big debate whether Die Hard 1 is a christmas movie?!
