In my case, Santa must’ve known I lacked for nothing in the way of cookware or tools, but I’m interested in what other Onions were gifted.
I woke up to find Father Christmas had left me three books -
Bethlehem -Fadi Rattan
Nights Out at Home - restaurant critic Jay Rayner’s stories and recipes fro stuff he cooks
The Pedant in the Kitchen - Julian Barnes. Reading the cover, he’s going to discuss just how much is a drizzle and when does a slice become a chop.
i received a new spoon rest after the former cracked. it’s all i wanted. the little things.
I’ve had this title up to the checkout numerous times. Let us know how you like it.
Santa brought me an assortment of Mrs. ricepad’s favorite chocolates. He doubled down and brought Mrs. ricepad a book she already had!
My wife got me a new blue gingham shirt. The old one has multiple iron on patches. I think I was starting to be an embarrassment for more than my manners and predilection for hole in the wall dining and Waffle House. My son got me some Cremo bar soap, my favorite, Bourbon and Oak.
Sunshine gave me a Home Depot gift card, she knows I have a lot of outdoor painting to do this Spring.
Literary Ladies Guide to the Writing Life by Nava Atlas, a gift to myself, recommended by a friend.
Oops! My MIL used to buy me novels again, that she’d bought me several years before.
I never told her.
Apparently my wife and one daughter both think that I need to “go pastel”.
I got two golf/polo style shirts that are both somewhere between periwinkle and “light periwinkle”. [sorry for periwinkle lovers, but I am not one of you…]
I did get some new oven mitts. I’d sown up the thumb creases in my old ones several times where they always break and would burn me.
Somehow, it was never important to get new ones when I was the one getting burned. But oh, noes, the first time one of the daughters got burned, I get new mitts.
Funny how that works…
Here’s the thing: A couple of months ago, Mrs. ricepad commented that she hadn’t realized there was one more book in a series she loved (Jean Auel’s “Earth’s Children” series), so I bought it in hard cover 1and stashed it away. About a week ago, I see that she’s reading the book in paperback. I casually asked, “Oh, so you got it?” She said she had forgotten that she had it, and found it in the bookcase while putting some other books away.
As for the chocolates, I actually purchased them for her back in October.
I must have been good this year. Santa brought Several baking books which are of interest to me, and a draught of fine brandy.
I got a bread slicing guide (just a bit of plastic kit that keeps your knife vertical. I’m terrible at cutting straight on my homemade loaves) and a magnetic, retractable razor bread lame that I’m excited about.
Sister-in-law regifted me an ice cream maker (something I’d never buy but will definitely use). Already made sorbet!
Partner got me a Pullman bread pan (Can’t WAIT to try it out next week!)
and a kitchenaid attachment that makes shave ice. You freeze pucks, stick them into the doodad, and get a cup of snow. She didn’t know her sister was getting the ice cream maker. I’ll give it a shot. It’s certainly QUICKER than the ice cream maker.
Also got a movie theater gift card from some friends.
Deets on the bread slicing guide? Is it a small bit? I would benefit from one, but don’t have room to store one of the bulkier models.
I did the Xmas shopping for most of your household. I also do most of the cooking.
I bought new Staub silicone utensils for myself: a pastry scraper, rice spoon, spoon with a hole in it. A Kuhn Rikon balloon whisk.
Soup socks.
2 mini Anchor Hocking pie plates, 4 inch diameter
Japanese coffee filters
New brushes for cleaning bottles, new drying mat, new scrubbing cloths for dishes.
A funnel to pour spices into jars.
Silicone strainer that clips onto the side of a big pot.
New spool of twine
In terms of foods, we lucked out.
I had bought a lot of frozen seafood that was delivered for our house, which will set us up for a couple months. We recieved chutney, Scottish fudge, tapenade, cookies.
I gave my family a Sicilian olive oil, a champagne vinegar and Firelli Extra Hot, which is an Italian hot sauce we haven’t cracked open yet. Also, a new bottle of Metaxa Greek brandy and a bottle of Basque wine a local shop owner recommended.
Here it is, assembled and deconstructed for storage. Haven’t actually used it yet. We’re headed out of town, so no point baking a new loaf til we’re back.

Thank you!
Love them.
