I am getting this for myself.
A bit form over function, but, heh, it’s Christmas (or at least it was).

Nice!
I’m getting myself some nori sheets, furikake and a 5 kg bag of sushi rice.
As mentioned elsewhere:
That looks gorgeous, but I’d be curious if it’s functional (I’m picturing the peppercorns spilling off the ends). Have you tried it somewhere?
I got myself the inexpensive small manual chopper I’ve been wanting for a while but resisting. Very effective, and a worthy adversary to the mini chopper that attaches to my immersion blender.
Yes, I was wondering if the stuff would spill over the sides as well. Does it come with some sort of warranty? Or it is just meant to look beautiful but not be very functional? I mean the mortar and pestle - not your chopper, which looks very functional.
Since (Microsoft) support of Windows 10 is ending this year, I’m getting a “refurbished” Windows 11 computer. I do all of my banking (on-line) and I’m thinking this is a necessary purchase for 2025.
Not a big thing, but I got a vacuum sealer for canning jars. For storage, not canning.
Same. My friend is obsessed with them and claims fruit last way longer. I have yet to try it out.
Oh, oops. She actually gifted us one, but she’s also not Santa so I guess we’re good
Can I come over?
I come equipped with my own makisu.
I’m intrigued. How does it work and why have you been coveting it?
Which one did you decide on? Can you describe a few ways you will use it? I have two vacuum sealers that I use regularly, but not one for canning jars!
Check with the manufacturers of your vacuum sealers. Some offer accessory attachments for sealing jars.
Interesting! Now I want to see one where the disk/ring travels in a circular trough, driven by a gerbil. Like an apple or grape mill…
I’m interested in how you think it works.
There are 3 blades, and the red thing on top is a handle attached to a string. You pull the handle and the blades spin. You control how hard and many times for how fine you want the dice.
What’s nice is that it’s not electric, and gets to a very fine mince without creating mush. I wanted it mainly for my mom’s kitchen, as the mini chopper for the immersion blender I prefer (Braun) has blown out a few times probably because of the voltage, even though it’s graded for the voltage, and we are constantly chopping things. The other electric one (Bamix) works fine but the jar is tiny.
I’ve been waiting (maybe 2 yrs?) for one of these to show up at any of my local TJX stores, and they finally did! Looks to be 1st quality, not a 2nds goof. (Does TJX still offer A-C 2nds?? I haven’t seen any A-C stuff with “S” stamped on it in years!) I usually try to wait until they hit markdown, but the price was good ($70) and it is the week after Xmas…
I have a REALLY old FoodSaver that may or may not work- it’s over 20 years old, but it did come wth a jar seal attachment. The one I just got’s brand is “VP05”. Bought on Amazon. I haven’t used it yet, but I think I may have to find an old fashioned “church key” can opener to break the seal. I’ll update you when I use it- it just came the day before I saw the original post. I’m not looking for full vacuum, really, the FoodSaver sometimes pulled all the water out of meats and vegetables and caused them to collapse and rot.
Thank you and I will wait to hear! Are you thinking pantry or fridge?
I have an Anova model with no frills, and a Zwilling that I use in the fridge, but only with their containers. I use canning jars in the pantry, mostly with gaskets and clamps, but I was curious about using regular canning jars.
ETA I just looked it up! The VPO5 seems to be saying it can bu used like a hot water bath in canning!
Santa did not bring me soup socks, 'cuz neither he (nor his helper) had ever heard of them until @Phoenikia posted about them in the “What Did Santa Bring” thread. I’ve used spice bags for herbs, but it never occured to me to stick an entire chicken carcass and veg in a bag for making stock. It makes perfect sense.
Soup socks arrived in the mail yesterday, just in time to qualify as a late Christmas present to myself.
Enjoy!!
