What are you baking? August 2022

I just called Costco SF; no stores around here have pistachio cream … maybe only in stock at the holidays?

Love Willie’s also! Fruit dessert season is just too short!!

I like that the top is crunchy, no oats, reheats well, EASY.

Stef and pavlova are in Canada, so it might be something sold there and not in the US.

Crispy peach cobbler. Half version in 7x11 inch pan. I was distracted and forgot the lemon zest and juice! Still tasted amazing.

Nothing fancy today, just a batch of Monster Cookies for the freezer for our camping trip with the grandkids this weekend.

Oddly enough, our campground will be 3 miles from Munchkin’s fruit stand where she bought her peaches. I’ll have to check it out! We are traveling 300 miles from the east though, not the west.

That recipe calls for frozen peaches, but says you can use fresh. Which did you use?

Lucky you - that is such a beautiful area! And camping!!

Right next to Smallwood’s is Prey’s. They open an hour later, but if you’re there at the right time, check them out, as well. I’m happy with the peaches we got from Smallwood’s this year (Prey’s was closed when we were there this time or I would have gone there first), but I think the ones we got from Prey’s last year were a bit bigger and more uniform. That could be a factor of the tough season this year, or might be something else.

ETA: Although if you are travelling with small children, you will never get past Smallwood’s. They have a petting zoo, etc.

Thanks, I’ll check them out. The family is looking forward to Leavenworth too. It is a pretty area for sure!

There’s some good German food in Leavenworth if you’re into that. We go every year as part of our cherry picking ritual.

Our daughter has been singing the praises of their sausages and vinegar and oil. Son in law is mentioning the beer! We haven’t been but once, just retired last fall after working 6 days a week. Didn’t leave much time to explore. So looking forward to it! My other half is of German descent, he is into it! We did spend a year in Germany when we were first married, (decades ago), there were some great eats there!

An ad hoc peach cobbler.

I used Chez Panisse’s ratios for a blueberry cobbler, but subbed peaches and added an extra ½ T. flour to a half recipe. Biscuits are Dorie Greenspan’s blueberry biscuits, brushed with milk and rolled in raw sugar before baking.

Andreas Keller is where we go for lunch. Someone always gets the schnitzel, someone the goulash, and someone their strange coca cola orange soda combo. Enjoy!

Fresh! With a few blueberries thrown in.

We loved the schnitzel in Germany, our fave!

If you’re travelling from the east, are you in the Spokane area? I’m in Bellingham…nice to have another for the PNW regional board!

Yep!

Those look loverly! When you get the chance, tell me about good dining in the Spokane area. We’re heading there next month to visit the relatives and tidy up their gravestones. We haven’t been over there for a few years. More like 6!
