Hooray on the big decision! Food looks great. Take care of that knee.
Congrats to Lulu!! Will she be far from home? And wow… a cake with the school colours?
Thank you!! She’ll be fairly far from home - a bus ride and then a plane ride (or vice versa). But I am shoring myself up (and so is she). It’s really exciting in so many ways.
I think the cake thing is a BIT much, but I’m seeing people go much farther overboard, and I like baking (who doesn’t like having a cake around??) so I’m willing to do it.
I hadn’t heard about the cake trend, but at least it’s not like the gender reveal cake situation (cut into a white-frosted cake to reveal pink or blue layers)! Congrats to Lulu and all of you!
Happy anniversary! It sounds like you had a lovely meal.
Congratulations to Lulu! I hope your knee heals quickly. That SK gyro salad is a favourite that appears on my menu frequently during the summer.
I agree with Truman! Congrats to Lulu and her parents for a happy decision for all, and all the celebrations. How wonderful that all of you are pleased! It’s not gender reveal, thank goodness! I met a newborn in December 1993 when she was three weeks old. When she graduated high school, the school colors were in the family party decorations including the cake.
I used my neighborhood Buy Nothing group to pass on two sets of mixing bowl, — one glass, the other multicolored melamine — last week. (I have plenty of stainless steel mixing bowls, which are lighter weight and easier to store.) I also recently answered a request to borrow a cake carrier by by giving to keep a second older/smaller one I don’t use anymore. My kitchen feels much less cluttered.
I don’t want to give medical advice at all!
Except to speak from my own experience with multiple knee cartilage tears followed by a half knee replacement ( still good after 24 years): some physical therapists are extremely helpful, others are not. I realized my personal situation at all times to be when in acute pain, if it hurts, stop. If you can stand up and do it without pain, I was able to clean out my bathroom closet! Movement bending knee vs. standing is a huge difference. I was also able to do some kinds of cooking that didn’t cause pain. For me it was all standing up, not moving up and down with the knee like in tennis. Standing and sorting, but that was my experience, not anyone else’s.
Best wishes to you for finding your own best solution, and definitely go for take out and eating out…and happy celebrations!
I was gifted a Blenheim long ago when we lived in the Bay Area. The first 'cot was the size of a tennis ball and sooooo meaty and juicy. I couldn’t stop thinking about, as that apricot grew, the story of James and the Giant Peach. Such a big fruit. The tree was a great producer throughout the years we lived there. A Eureka lemon was its neighbor and did very well, too.
I realized that I am just not that fancy, so I have baked a single layer chocolate fudge cake (smitten Kitchen) and iced it with vanilla frosting and then put tons of the appropriate color sparkly sprinkles on top.
Yep, that would have been my approach, too. Probably tastes better that way, win-win
And just today, I unloaded the carafe from a Toddy (OG cold brew system) I haven’t used for maybe a decade, since the plastic stopper and other plastic parts started degrading, giving to someone looking for glass carafes for hosting a sangria bar. (I wish someone I know would host a sangria bar!) If you need to make a spring cleaning purge, I’ve found that lots of things find happy homes via Buy Nothing! (There’s a dedicated app as well as neighborhood Facebook groups.)
