It is a very nice (albeit more expensive, obviously) alternative to canned tuna. Which, by the way, TJ’s was out of when I went there Sunday, so I stocked up on the smoked trout.
I also really like the smoked herring, by the way. Probably not as suitable for sandwiches, but it does make a really nice spread.
Yea! for Aiolis Portuguese red blend. I’ve liked every Portuguese wine I’ve gotten there, including a 1979 port that I got in around 1988 and still have a few bottles left.
Yay for the half moon cookies I snagged in Peobody MA Wednesday. A 10 minute wait in a line with a varying degree of social distancing was probably a little longer than the time I spent in the store.
Found a very fresh loaf of their SF style sourdough, dark roast coffee, irish tea bags, a few bottles of wine and these cookies.
They are pretty good, nice dark fudge chocolate and more bland but acceptable vanilla frosting over a cake kind of cookie. Goes well with my tea in the afternoon.
Nay for the frozen shrimp patties and salmon patties. I have not liked any of the frozen proteins I’ve bought at TJs, and the pattern continues. Neither patty is particularly seasoned - maybe a little salt - and both flavors taste overly fishy in an old or poor quality way. Not a repeat. Also meh on the salmon cream cheese. It’s very sour. Surprisingly so.
just tried the kale gnocchi, big yay! good flavor, and better texture than the cauliflower gnocchi, which can be a little mushy. sautéed in a bit of olive oil and over greens with basil oil and a cut up tomato.
yay to the frozen brioche french toast. nice thick slices — crispy edges after 10 minutes in a toaster oven a tiny bit too much cinnamon for my taste (i prefer nutmeg), but with maple syrup, it was a nice treat.
We’ll give this a “pass”. Once the water dissipated, it was more like 12 oz. And an app, rather than a meal. Mussels were the only seafood in the package that held up. They were more chewy than we would have liked, too. The hard frozen tomato sauce was the only winner here. But I wasted gallons of tap water softening the pack enough to cook it in the pan.
big nay for coconut milk. no stabilizers, so it separates in the fridge — used if for overnight oatmeal, and there was a solid layer on top. and an extremely unpleasant texture. not sure why some people are so opposed to guar gum, which is extracted from beans, not cooked up in a laboratory.
been a challenge to get to my regular supermarket, which is why i tried tj’s. i’m considering sucking it up and getting some sent from target or amazon.
YAY: Corn Chowder (new item, refrigerator section). Nice bacon-y flavor, good consistency. I added a little hot sauce, but I do that with most soups. Would definitely buy this again.
I like their coconut milk, and am glad it does not have stabilizers. It is richer than many other brands, which is good.
The can has to be shaken before use, and if it’s colder than usual, may benefit from a soak in warm water to liquefy the cream portion so it reincorporates when shaken, but that’s normal.
i actually don’t find it richer than other brands. i live alone and often don’t use the whole can at once. sometime, i’ll make a coconut milk and egg mixture to use to make more than one serving of french toast. without stabilizers, the mixture separates affects the texture.
