@brucesw was asking about a canned Tuna thread – here you go!!

I use A LOT of Tuna and try to get it on sale. Lately, one grocery store has been running a 10 cans for $5 special.

One of our new favorite easy meals for dinner is Tuna Cakes… @LindaWhit gave me a recipe for a lemon aioli which works perfect on these.

I think he was asking for a general thread about tinned fish - I hope we can change the title to tinned fish (and for me personally tuna is the most boring tinned fish tastewise)

I’m sure the mods can easily adjust the title to “Tinned Fish and Canned Tuna Thread for Bruce!!”

I like Tunisian Tuna Sandwiches

and Tunisian Tuna Salad.

We really enjoyed a tuna artichoke paella last week.

I make tuna cakes / patties, too.

For a pasta made with sardines and anchovies, I like this Pasta di San Giuseppe. I leave out the fennel (the vegetable) .

I also love this sandwich

Great thread idea! I’ll follow @ipsedixit’s example and post my own current selection … pulled from my absolutely chaotic cabinet and re-arranged on the basement floor. (With a few Pellegrino bottles in the background to help block the also rather chaotic state of the basement right behind where I took the photo…)

I mostly prefer sardines to tuna (always packed in oil), and I think they sub pretty well in just about any application. The Korean tuna with peppers is a new acquisition and I haven’t sampled it yet. Excited to give it a go shortly. That one, I don’t think will be quite equivalent to other tinned fish; it apparently contains some potato and carrot chunks, among other things.

I was disappointed with the much-touted Fishwife brand, especially given the price tag.

I haven’t tried it yet either. Really not a canned tuna fan. I bought it on a whim when it was on sale at Target and always reach around it for a can of sardines instead…

Did you like the Fishwife tuna? I’ve been wanting to try it … some Costcos have it but I don’t know the price. I always buy Wild Planet tuna at Costco.

I prefer almost any tinned fish over tuna (I don’t care much for tuna, fresh or canned) — gimme herring, mackerel, sardines, mussels, razor clams, etc.

Aldi had it for cheaper. Still pretty uninteresting. I have the one with Spanish lemon left, but have not been in a rush to open it.

I’m very fond of tuna salad made with Wild Planet (I used to buy Bumble Bee White), good to keep cans in pantry.

My PIC is very fond of tuna salad made with the Genova brand yellowfin in olive oil, and I regularly make it for his lunches.

I have no beef with tuna salad per se — certainly not my own, which is delicious, but I find canned tuna ‘as is’ terribly boring. As I posted upthread, there’s far more interesting canned fish out there.

I find that especially water-packed, it has a “smell” that I can’t quite get around. Oil-packed ones are much better but still have a little bit. That’s why I bought the Fishwife stuff actually - I was hoping the smell would be masked by the peppers.

All of that said: My spouse likes water packed tuna and complains that my sardines smell like cat food. So…to each their own.

Julia Child said she always bought tuna packed in olive oil … the Wild Planet is not packed in water, just packed in a little of its own juices, which I drain and discard.

(I used to give juice and a bit of tuna to my cat but she started ignoring it so now I don’t bother.)

I forgot I keep some canned fish in my “Power Outage” box. I date the cans and change them out every six months or so.

I figure during a power outage I could use the canned salmon to make some type of dinner using my butane stove or rocket stove.

I should probably add a box of minute rice to that power outage box. A “fried rice” with canned vegetables and canned salmon sounds like a pretty good dinner??
