Way to go!! Mine gets a workout!!
If I could suggest an attachment… go with the pasta roller set (3 pieces). The Kitchen Aid brand is so worth the extra money.
Sigh…I want one. Maybe an Onion will bequeath me one in their will
Or maybe an Onion near me will find one thrifting and not want it themselves?
The last one that came thru our Goodwill went for $50 and was missing the bowl!
Sold instantly.
Speaking of extra bowls…an additional bowl and paddle attachment has been very handy in this kitchen. I found both at a heavily discounted price at a home store (which has since gone under) for 5.5 my 23 y.o. bowl lift machine. I was looking for the paddle attachment with the bowl scraper feature, but it doesn’t work with my bowl. Nevertheless, I scored with the bowl and paddle for $19.99. It was part a returned set; have no idea where the rest of the kit went.
I feel like where I am thrift stores are pretty junky. It seems like folks keep their things until they wear out.
Yeah, mine only came with dough hook and whisk. I’d buy that paddle and bowl, too.
Like you, Christina, I live in an area where it would be a surprise to find original: Pyrex/Anchor/Corningware, etc. All the CI is Chinese. Auctions and Craig’s, for me. Rummage, too.
Could be the case. A relative volunteers at a twice-yearly charity sale that happens to be in an expensive zip code, and the items are nothing like what I have seen at thrift shops near me. The proceeds help the charity quite a bit so it’s a win all around.
My mom lives in Sun City, AZ, and the auctions for the deceased often have great deals on beautiful stuff. Not by me.
This doesn’t QUITE count as thriftiness, but Mom is moving to a facility this month, so this begins the process of emptying the condo, including a quite respectable collection of appliances and bakeware.
I’m planning on keeping her (nearly unused) cookie sheets, tube pan &c. in addition to what I believe are a late 80’s-era Cuisenart and late 80’s KA stand mixer.
I have a KA already, but I’ll want to date that KA and see if it’s still from the ‘all metal gears’ era.
I have my mother’s 80’s KA mixer still in a box.
Dayamn! How old you figure it is? 80’s, yes; but, where is the dividing line between plastic and metal gears?
Some quick googling indicates that the worm.gear, specifically, was switched to nylon in the artisan and classic models in the 70s. All others have all metal gears. This was done to allow the worm.gear to shred if the mixer was overtaxed, thus protecting the rest of the motor.
Problem was the nylon gears tended to wear too quickly. Newer nylon gears are reinforced by Kevlar fibers, increasing their lifespan but still allowing them to shred. Worm gear replacements are easily available for purchase, inexpensive ($20 or less it seems) and instructions to replace them are readily available.
Thank you for that information. I will keep that in mind if I have a failure!
The advantage of being poor in a rich town is the well off give away some really cool stuff
Lots of we’ve traveled the world and settled down here and have too much stuff.
Word!
Here’s my latest find, from a regular summertime swap meet in the poorest area of my state. $1 for a pristine carbon steel turner that cleaned up nicely. No bends or kinks, and exquisitely thin at the tip.
Where’s the poorest part?
Yakima?
I consider upriver Skagit/Sauk/Suiattle Valleys to be the hardscrabliest. Or maybe the Colville Nation.
A strange tureen I found apparently from the Prince of Wales ’ visit to Toronto in 1860.
@Phoenikia
Do you know much about this Toronto history?
