Things you like to use a microwave to do

Is that a Greek/Turkish coffee grinder? I have one.

Pepper mill. I guess it could grind coffee, too. It is a marvelous pepper mill.

My kids went through a phase a few years ago during which they experimented a lot with various microwave mug cake recipes. I just passed this one along and my daughter doesn’t believe that she’s seen it before. Will be interesting to get a review!

Most of their attempts wound up really bad – there are lots of very odd/fake recipes floating around social media – but she and a friend eventually found the recipe below, which I’m sharing in case you’re interested in a potential alternative to the NYT thing. I have not tried this myself and this is actually my first time seeing the recipe, although my kids have made it probably a dozen times combined and swear by it. I’m somewhat alarmed by the amount of oil included herein…

1/4c flour
1/4c sugar
2 tbsp cocoa powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp baking powder
3 tbsp milk
2 tbsp oil
1/4 tsp vanilla
pinch salt

Mix in a mug, microwave for 1m30s … enjoy?

Mine looks like that too, but it’s all corroded. I must have used it for salt.

Please check your messages for plate information.

I got my friend one of those way back when. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

We’ll try it! Thanks. Maybe they can substitute some Nutella for part of the oil.

I just MWed some convection oven fries.

I’m sorry for your loss.

Wait…… :eyes:

To be clear, I peeled, sliced, microwaved, tossed in oil, and put the potatoes in the convection oven on a rack. They were ok, but a nice MR chuck burger on a buttered Martin’s roll, cooked on the griddle, with a thick slice of grilled red onion, all topped with melted Comte was better than ok.

Burger for the win!

Oooh, that makes a lot more sense. I thought you meant you bought some packaged fries with instructions that said to use the convection oven, nuked them, and – presumably – created a soggy mess

Burger sounds great. Once in college I tried microwaving a patty…not something I’d recommend. Yikes.

You can, however, make a very nice single serving of potato chips entirely in the microwave. Also tortilla chips.

Sounds similar to the Cook’s Illustrated method for crispy roast potatoes.

I have never seen theirs, but I parboil big chunks, score the outsides with a fork, dry, toss in oil, salt, and roast. Parboiling or double frying yields a fluffier texture than the MW shortcut IMO, but since convection oven fries are already inferior to deep fat frying, who cares? :winking_face_with_tongue:

Give this recipe a shot some time. Crispiest non-fried taters you’ll ever have.

For me a single serving of potato chips is this

There is an upgraded method! I thought Kenji had posted it but I just googled and can’t find that source; now I’m wondering if I first read about it in a thread back on CH. Kenji^3

First you do this:

Then you rinse off the salt and then smash, a la:

Then you roast, using a gentler version of the toss mentioned in the link you posted. Definitely the best I’ve ever made. A lot of work, though.
