The hard and soft salamis and corned beef are just as tasty.
Right, it’s the latter. But the dogs are first heated in a skillet and the chili & cheese sauces are also hot to start. Then I set the buns in the dish and add onions on the bottom along with catsup or mustard or both (whatever the peeps want, hoping I can remember where they are afterwards), drop in the dog, then the chili and cheese sauces. The chili sauce is a lot like what you might get in Cincinnati - king of a wet ground beef sauce, and not a whole lot of chili powder.
Foil and bake 30 minutes then pop them out with tongs.
I don’t remember where I got this idea, but if I had to guess, it would be one of those Midwestern cooking magazines (remember when we got print editions???) like “Taste Of Home”. At least, it’s very much in line with their typical type of dish.
I mean, I’d eat that.
You went to Patrick Cudahy slaughterhouse, too? That’s why I only eat natural casing dogs. I an tell the casing is intestine and the meat is meat. There ya go.
A side note: Arthur Bryant always used Cudahy ribs back then. I remember the big wax boxes they came in.
ESPN: ART DONOVAN HOT DOGS {ADWEEK: BEST SPOTS OF
SEPTEMBER 1995}
Summary
In this commercial promoting National Football League broadcasts on ESPN, several sports lovers are shown sitting around a slide projector at the home of former NFL player Art Donovan. But instead of watching slides of sporting events, they’re watching slides of hot dogs. Slogan (supered): "The NFL on ESPN. Ain’t football great?”
Artie Donovan was quite a character on Baltimore local TV, too. And he loved hot dogs. And he lived to 89.
Hot dogs are a generational thing, before there were taco trucks, fast food, food courts and other options. Hot dogs were one of the few quick hand foods available. Julia Child was a Costco hot dog fan….from that generation and so was my dad….always wanted the Costco hot dog, and what a deal. And like Clint Eastwood, catsup on an hot dog was just WRONG. After all the warnings that processed meat is bad for you, I’ve slowed down on hot dogs. Even the healthy “uncured” Applegate hot dogs get a poor health rating because a good dog has sodium and fat.
Julia Child lived to 91. My dad to 95.
. There must be something else to it that they haven’t discovered yet. I have extremely long-lived people in my family; others, not so much at all. Their lifestyles were identical. I just do what I can, but I’m at my sell-by date anyway, so hand me a dog.
No, it was the Eckrich plant in Ft Wayne.
I was the only one who didn’t eat the free hot dog at the end of the tour, and it put me off my beloved pickle loaf for life!
