Nice SIL. Those look mouth wateringly good. I am guessing you don’t like peppers. I was always a doubter when it came to Chicago dogs, and my first one was out of balance, topped with too much tomato and celery salt. When I returned to them, they were in perfect balance. I love the way that whole pile exceeds the sum of its parts.
Around $5, same price as a hot dog from a vendor on the street.
It costs more because it’s a small business outside the doors of a Canadian Tire, and not a loss leader.
We go out of our way for. hot dog at Canadian Tire during the summer.
I gave up my Costco membership around 8 years ago.
The parking lot at the North London Costco is a nightmare. The parking lot at the Canadian Tire is a much better place to park.
Doesn’t make it better than Costco’s dog.
I like the taste of the hot dogs grilled outside Canadian Tire more than the taste of Costco hot dogs. I don’t like the actual hot dog Costco cooks.
The parking being easier is an added perk
I was a Costco member from 2004-2017ish. I only bought the hot dog maybe 3 times, and slice of pizza once or twice.
Costco’s hot dog is cheaper, but not better. (To me) YMMV
Crappy Tyre dogs = street meat, decent drunk food
I have been sober for all the hot dogs I’ve eaten since around 1994. I have had Chinese food, cheese steaks, poutine, and Kraft Dinner after the bar over the last 30 years. I don’t crave hot dogs when I’ve been drinking
Maybe you haven’t been drunk enough
I’m pretty sure eating a hot dog while drunk at 21, is the reason why I no longer eat hot dogs while drunk. I also no longer mix iced tea and gin, nor do I eat sushi before a heavy night of drinking. I haven’t touched Black Sambuca since 1997.
I don’t think I’ve had any drunk food in close to 10 years. My vice while drunk seems to be texting, not eating.
Luckily, I never got into Tweeting or posting on HO while drunk.
Ah to be young and foolish again
Or you have a Jack in the Box nearby.
I find it amusing that people complain about the unhealthiness of hot dogs and other junk foods. We all know they are unhealthy, but the joy they bring outweighs the health concerns. Ditto for gin, rare ribeyes, creme brûlée, and so much more. It is unlikely to see people react so negatively to those things the way people do to hot dogs. Sure, hot dogs are made from bits of meat we would not usually eat. So are tamales, but people don’t say, “eeewww.” They say, “mmmmmm.”
We still have some (in the freezer) and I will try the complete package again, hopefully with better tomatoes. They are really good dogs, even with just mustard, relish and onions.
FUD seems to be the commonly used brand of franks in the Hispanic market. I’ve only encountered it in Mexican tortas.
“FUD, which stands for Fine, Unique, and Delicious, is the leading refrigerated foods brand in Mexico, and one of the most recognized brands in the United States among Hispanic consumers. Our vast and delicious product line adds variety and uniqueness to the processed meat’s industry.”
The franks are chicken and pork. I didn’t realize they made all those other sausage products.
Worst? Well, pretty useless, I’d say. Chicken sausages need to include some dark meat IMO.
I bought some salmon franks a couple of years ago, can’t remember where. A real disappointment. May still have 1/2 the package (2 remaining). Kind of expensive too, for a 4 pack.
100% agree
I shared a pack from Chi with a co-worker (more than 20 years ago) including 2 Lou Malnati deep dish pizzas and 2 packs of makings for a Chicago Style Dog. Best thing about the pizzas - the buttery crust. I’ll stick with the Detroit version of deep dish pie, though. Chi style dogs are good if properly put together. Most places down here that offer them don’t do it very well. A poster on the old Road Food ran a school for prospective hot dog cart operators to teach them the ‘official’ way to do it. @bbqboy may know how to look him up.
His name is Mark Reitman.
I believe they ended up in Phoenix.
He and his wife came through here in Southern Oregon once when they were searching for places to move.
Don’t know whether he still runs his school or not. I’ve lost track of a lot of the Roadfood crowd after they moved over to FB. A lot of those old coots never joined FB.
I’ll investigate!
Edit: looks like he turned over the HDU to a new professor.
Edit 2: looks like the roadfood group has disappeared from FB too.
I’ve been to the Vienna Beef factory outlet in Chicago. Got lost driving around and saw it so had to stop. Bought a bunch of reject second hot dogs.
On what basis (bases) were they rejected? Miscut? Misshappen? Ingredients were clearly identifiable? Did they taste ok?
Misshaped, not uniform, put into a vacuum sealed bag randomly. The natural casing kept the dogs from falling apart. Otherwise they were the same, tasted like the regular dogs.
Does this mean you bake the hot dog in the chili and cheese in a Pyrex pan and then transfer it to a bun, or assemble the whole thing and bake in the Pyrex pan?
